ESPN's John Clayton reports the Raiders, Buccaneers, and Broncos all have interest in free agent Jeff Garcia.

 

Of the three teams named, Oakland would likely provide Garcia with the best chance to start, and that's what it may come down to for the 36-year-old. The Eagles, Vikings, and Bears appear to be out of the running.

Garcia throwing to Moss & Porter - who Al Davis says are going nowhere - could make for some very interesting FF numbers. Garcia also has enough escapability to help him behind that line. That also helps Walter gain more experience - and I still think he'll be a quality NFL QB.

 

This would be right in line w/ something Davis would do & would certainly throw a huge twist into the draft this year.

I think Tampa offers a good landing spot for him.

That offense there is a style he can play and thrive in.

I think the Raiders should take a shot at Garcia, and NOT draft Russell. They could get AP or CJ with that pick, get Garcia at QB, and spend the rest of the draft on rebuilding the O-line. Plus, pick up an O-lineman in FA.

It has been rumoured that Kiffen is a Gruden disciple and runs a somewhat modified West Coast Offense. He hired Greg Knapp from Atlanta as his Offensive Coordinater who coached Garcia in San Fran when he was connecting with Owens before San Fran fell apart. Kiffen has said he would run the offense, he called the plays for USC the past three years, but Knapp will have a strong influence on the offense as well.

 

As for the offensive line, they will be using a zone-blocking scheme this year, as opposed to the archaic man-to-man scheme that Shell/Slater ran. Zone-blocking schemes work better with the West Coast Offense and is an easier scheme to run for young and athletic but relatively inexperienced linemen....the type the Raiders have now. Man-to-man schemes require overpowering linemen that can dominate their opponent. Gallery and Grove played better under the zone-blocking scheme that Norv Turner's offensive line coachs employed in 2005 and 2004 so the switch back to zone-blocking should help these two young players.

 

Switching from 7 step drops to 3 step drops that the WCO employs should put less pressure on the Offensive line by itself. Consistent play calling and a more modern offense should help as well.

This is what I hope happens. If they keep Moss, draft Adrian Petterson, if the trade Moss away, draft Calvin....then rebuild the O-line through later rounds in the draft and through free agency

So tell me how the Raiders went from giving up 45 sacks in 2005 to giving up 72 sacks in 2006 with almost the same exact Starting Linemen?

 

2005 Starters Gallery/Simms/Grove/Badger/Walker gave up 45 sacks

 

2006 Starters Gallery/Simms/Grove/Booth/Walker gave up 72 sacks

 

The primary difference between 2005 and 2006 were not the players starting on the line. The primary difference was the coaching they were receiving and the gameplan they were trying to implement.

 

In 2005 the Raiders used a Zone-Blocking Scheme with a traditional Offense that utilized long and intermediate passes to the wideouts as well as dump-offs to the running back.

 

In 2006 the Raiders used a Man-to-Man Scheme with an outdated Offense that emphased long balls to the wideouts and tightends but almost no dump-offs to the running back.

 

It is pretty clear that coaching and gameplanning were the primary factors in the increase in allowed sacks from 2005 (45) to 2006 (72).

 

Sure the Raiders may need to pickup another lineman or two this offseason to improve personel, but a change in coaching scheme back to a more Traditional Offense with Zone Blocking schemes should help also.
