Grits and Shins
I'm in a dynasty league right now that includes punters and kickers. We are discussing the merits of eliminating both positions. Obviously punters are very non-traditional but place kickers are very traditional. Anybody play in a league without kickers? [EDIT] The off season discussion was opened to get rid of the punter position. Because many of the arguments that have been made to eliminate the punter also apply to the kicker one of the things we are considering is elimination of the position all together. godtomsatan
Why would you get rid of kickers? Not disputing the notion, just curious as to the rationale. Do you not use TE either?

Because the relative difference between the top position and the 10th position is very small, unpredictable and inconsistent year to year. Big Country
Because the relative difference between the top position and the 10th position is very small, unpredictable and inconsistent year to year. The same could almost be said about QBs. That said, I can think of no real reason in support of, or against kickers. The kicking game is an important part of "real" football strategy, but, that does not always equate with "fantasy" football strategy. Bill Swerski
Because the relative difference between the top position and the 10th position is very small, unpredictable and inconsistent year to year. So, does your league have team defenses as well?
Grits and Shins
This is a dynasty league where we can assign long term contracts to our players. Needless to say it is very rare for a kicker to go for more than $1 or $2 (out of $500) and very rare for a kicker to get more than a 1 year contract. So we are discussing the value they have to the league. No, no defenses. Edited March 1, 2007 by Grits and Shins

Big Country
Kickers as a whole have little value to a league overall, but, what they do provide is that little extra oommpphh to a team in those weeks where their kicker gets 4 FGS or so. Sure, may just be a luck factor, but a lot of FF is luck.
Bill Swerski
I guess the answer depends on how many wildcards you want in your league. Agreed that kickers in general are fickle, but I've always thought that it adds another dimension to the league. Given that stud, featured backs are becoming an endangered species these days, I'd like to give somebody who didn't have the opportunity to draft LT or LJ a chance to nab a guy whose offense gives him a lot of FG attempts. Even though their impact is pretty minimal, guys like Stover, Akers, and Vanderjagt have literally won games for me in previous years. That said, I can understand why you might want to elminate kickers from a dynasty league. I wouldn't, but that's JMO.

My argument on punters was that given the unpredicatiblity of punters and the relative sameness of the top 15 that they were simply there to introduce a randomness factor. Bronco Billy
In short, yes, every league I play in uses kickers. Man, I really do feel for guys who play in leagues with only a few starting positions. I don't really understand why a league would want to cut back on a position. It makes FF even more boring.

We start 7 skill positions not including PK or PN Standard – 2 RB, 4 WR, 1 TE Hail Mary – 1 RB, 5 WR, 1 TE Short Yardage – 2 RB, 3 WR, 2 TE
muck
And, fwiw, our scoring is a bit diff't, too...things are put together where the very best QBs, RBs and WRs will score around the same amount ... as will the middle-of-the-pack starters at those positions...as will the bottom wrung of starters at the positions. Scoring for our punters is: 0.025pts for each punted yard and 1pt for each punt downed inside the 20 Scoring for our placekickers is: 3pts for FGs <39yds; 4pts for FGs <49yds, 5pts for FGs>49yds and 1pt for PATs -2pts for missed FGs <29yds, -1pt for missed FGs<39yds and also for missed PATs The very best PKs will score about the same as the very best punters ... and the very best PKs and PNs will score about 1/2 the points as, say, the #5 WR.
