Disfunction Junction Posted March 1, 2007 Author Share Posted March 1, 2007 IRVING, Texas - When Drew Bledsoe threw a costly interception late in the first half of a home game with the Giants last season, few expected it to be his last pass of that game. As it turned out, it was Bledsoe's last pass of the season, and now, the last of his Cowboys career. As expected, the Cowboys officially released the veteran quarterback on Thursday, along with tight end Ryan Hannam and guard E.J. Whitely. By cutting Bledsoe, the Cowboys avoid a $1 million roster bonus in Bledsoe's contract. "I spoke with Drew today and told him that this was primarily a cap decision and that the door was very much open for him being a part of our future," said Cowboys general manager Jerry Jones. "Drew has been a solid leader for our team and a true professional both on and off the field. He has also been a great role model to all of our players through his love of children and his interaction with kids in need. He has been a special contributor to this organization on many levels." Bledsoe, a 14-year veteran, was a 12-10 as a starter for the Cowboys the last two seasons. He ranks fifth in NFL history in passing attempts (6,717) and completions (3,839) and seventh in passing yards with 44,611. The Cowboys also have a decision to make regarding wide receiver Terry Glenn, who is due a $5 million roster bonus on Saturday. However, Glenn is expected to receive his bonus, with the Cowboys having the option to prorate the money over the remaining four years of his contract to lower the salary-cap hit. While it appears Glenn will be sticking around here in Dallas, one of his favorite quarterbacks throughout his career will be moving on. Bledsoe, who played with Glenn for six years in New England from 1996-01 and then two more here with the Cowboys, immediately becomes a free agent to sign with another club. After joining the Cowboys before the 2005 season, Bledsoe started his first 22 games with the organization, including all 16 in his first year. But after just six starts in 2006, resulting in a 3-3 record, the Cowboys benched Bledsoe in favor of Tony Romo. Bledsoe was pulled at halftime of the Oct. 23 loss to the Giants and never played again. He remained the offensive captain for the rest of the season, and was the Cowboys' only captain for the seven games once Greg Ellis was lost for the year with an Achilles injury. Romo won five of his first six starts before the Cowboys faded down the stretch, limping into the playoffs with a 9-7 record before losing to Seattle in the first round of the playoffs. As for Hannam, the Cowboys signed the veteran tight end before last season as an unrestricted free agent. But after playing just two games early in the season, Hannam was placed on injured reserve, suffering from a degenerative condition in his right knee. Whitely, a seventh-round draft pick from Texas Tech, suffered a torn ACL in his left knee during a rookie mini-camp last May.
