Travis Henry likely cut on SAT

He ran okay, but certainly not $8.3 million okay. Makes you wonder why they write contracts that force teams to cut them.... hey... maybe they meant for that to happen?

Titans likely to cut Henry Saturday

By PAUL KUHARSKY

Staff Writer

The Titans appear likely to wind up in position to cut running back Travis Henry Saturday in order to avoid an $8.3 million roster bonus that’s due Monday.

Indications are talks between General Manager Mike Reinfeldt and agent Hadley Engelhard have not progressed enough for the team to sidestep the bonus.

The contract, not Henry’s play or production, is the issue.

While Reinfeldt said he remains optimistic as long as the two sides are talking, he allowed for the possibility that an exploration of free agency by Henry might be good for both sides.

“I still would be optimistic that he would return,” Reinfeldt said. “Sometimes you need to look at the market and see what all is out there. I’m not sure that’s a terrible thing…”

“It’s one thing to sit back and say ‘If I were a free agent, people would offer me this.’ It’s a different thing when they actually become a free agent and find out what people are willing to offer them. Sometimes that’s not a bad thing.”

Engelhard could not be reached for comment.

Henry emerged as the starter early last season and keyed what wound up to be the NFL’s fifth-ranked rushing attack with 1,211 rushing yards, seven touchdowns and six 100-yard games.

If the Titans cut Henry and he lands elsewhere, they’ll be left with LenDale White as their feature back unless they sign another free agent or address the position again in the draft.

Chris Brown became a free agent today and reportedly has a long list of suitors. It’s doubtful he would re-emerge as an option for the Titans after falling out of favor last season.

With Brown likely out the door and Henry maybe following him, do the Titans think White is da man? Surely not. :D

White shows promise, and with JLewis and Barlow floating around it's not like there aren't rbbc options for the Titans. Maybe TJ from Chicago?

Remember now, T-Hen is a Tennessee kid. If I was a bettin man I'd say he ultimately lowers his number a bit and sticks around. He won't find a much better opportunity for playing time.

Things working against Henry in free agency:

1. 2 strikes on the substance abuse program - a year ban is next

2. Turns 29 in 2007 - this is his last good contract (front loaded?)

3. Injury history

Things working for him:

1. Recent production - something Chris Brown, Duckett, etc can't say they have

2. No trade needed to get him

3. History of playing while injured

Regardless if he restructures, the Titans will bring in a free agent and/or draft pick. All they have on the roster is White and Ganther. They'll need 3 to 4 RBs on the roster, not just 2.

Tennessee isnt going to pay the $8M roster bonus. If they cant re-do the deal, then they will cut him and let him go into fa. They will continue to try to sign him after he is cut, and I think they eventually will get a deal done to bring him back.

The Titans have released RB Travis Henry rather than pay him the $8.3 million roster bonus due to him. Henry is now scheduled to visit Broncos on Saturday night.

Henry does have some decent value and had a nice bounce-back year last year. I dont know how much teams are willing to pay for him thought. I do believe that he will eventually re-sign with the Titans. He has a good situation in Tennessee and frankly I dont think anybody will pay him what the Titans will. So, let him go flirt with a few teams but I think he will in the end, come back home.
