Vikes Sign LB and TE

Shiancoe signs

The Vikings have signed tight end Visanthe Shiancoe and LB Vinny Ciuriu.

Presumably, that means WR Kevin Curtis left town without a deal.

Shiancoe was also drawing significant interest from the Seattle Seahawks.

That also means that the Vikings are no longer interested in Daniel Graham.

Shiancoe gets five-year deal worth about $18 million

To make Winter Park his first and only stop, the Vikings signed TE Visanthe Shiancoe to a five-year contract worth about $18 million, including $7 million in guarantees.

Does that seem like a steep price to anyone else? There obviously was a market for him (Seattle was definitely a player). But that seems like a lot for someone who hasn't scored a touchdown in the last two seasons.

We'll see what the Vikings have to say in about 30 minutes.

Well, he was a backup to Shockey, correct? Not like he was a backup to a no name TE and couldn't make the starting lineup. How many stats do backups typically have? :D

Fair point. But Shockey's been banged-up enough over the last few years that Shiancoe's seen the field, and he hasn't really done all that much to impress me. Not saying he's a bad player, but it's also not a situation where he's done anything to warrant him getting any more time. And for that amount of guaranteed money? Unreal.

Well....I'd argue he has had to deal with Eli throwing him the ball :D

But I'm not sure who will be throwing him the ball this year. :D

Shiancoe got $7 million guaranteed?! He's got 35 catches.. in his four year career. He's a decent blocker, and I liked having him as a backup TE.. but good god. What is going on?

Supply and Demand for TE this year is low on the supply side in both the free agency and the draft and add to the fact of the escalating salaries, this will be norm in the next year or two. An average player gets more than he should.

I am going to wait and hold judgement on the gauranteed part until I hear from an official source. This could be incentive laden...etc. I am hoping he will be an upgrade to Wiggins and will be able to stretch the field a little more.

Why would stretching the field matter to a team that never throws it further than three yards? :D:D

Actually...I'm happy to see they seemed to know what they wanted and went out and got him. I think like most people, Graham may have been at the top of the list of free agent TEs this year, but to get him, we'd really have to overpay. Some wanted Eric Johnson...I'm not seeing any reason to pay anything to a player that can't go two games without being injured.

We've got 30 mill to spend again this year...I see no reason to go around low balling a player if we feel he's the guy we want. Especially this year, when there's not a whole lot of coveted FA's in the first place.

People said we overpaid for a backup RB that hadn't done anything in his career last year, and I think he did just fine, over 1200 yds in an offense where teams could just load up the line to stop him, knowing our QB couldn't throw it 15 yds past the line of scrimmage.

Yeah but if that is your only option because nobody else is good enough to get open.

Team signs two, misses out on one

The Vikings didn't get a chance to make a bid for receiver Ashley Lelie, but they landed a tight end and a linebacker.

By Kevin Seifert and Judd Zulgad, Star Tribune staff writers

As they welcomed their first two free-agent signings Saturday, the Vikings missed an opportunity to lock down a third and never got the chance to bid on a fourth.

Shortly after tight end Visanthe Shiancoe and linebacker Vinny Ciurciu signed contracts, St. Louis receiver Kevin Curtis departed Winter Park and headed for Detroit. Meanwhile, free-agent receiver Ashley Lelie signed with San Francisco, two days before a planned visit to Minnesota.

The Vikings had hoped Lelie would wait until Monday to make a decision, and they tried to convince Curtis to cancel his trip to Detroit. But Curtis appears intrigued by the idea of playing for Lions offensive coordinator Mike Martz, formerly his head coach in St. Louis.

Curtis is the Vikings' top choice to lead the rebuilding of their receiving corps; they will be left to sift through a limited talent pool if he signs today with the Lions.

"You never know what's going to happen," said Rick Spielman, Vikings vice president of player personnel.

"Sometimes if they get out of your building, they might not come back. If that happens, we'll re-group. ... We knew there were two places he wanted to go visit before he made a decision," Spielman said.

The Vikings have two veteran receivers under contract, Troy Williamson and Billy McMullen. With Lelie out of the mix, the top remaining free agent receivers -- Joe Horn, Eric Moulds, Donte Stallworth and Keenan McCardell -- all have age or injury histories working against them.

Spielman and coach Brad Childress will travel to South Bend, Ind., today to attend Notre Dame's pro-day workout, and Monday is the earliest the Vikings will entertain another group of visitors.

Shiancoe, while not a receiver, will add speed and playmaking ability to the Vikings' offense. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.58 seconds during the 2003 NFL scouting combine, and he was the Vikings' first priority at a position that also includes free agent Daniel Graham. Shiancoe canceled several other visits when the Vikings offered him a five-year contract worth $18.2 million, including $7 million guaranteed.

The New York Giants used him mostly as a blocker behind starter Jeremy Shockey, and Shiancoe has caught only 35 passes in four seasons. But the Vikings believe he can blossom into a more versatile performer.

"He's well-rounded," Childress said.

"He can play on the line of scrimmage. He can play away from the tackle. ... He can block and I think he can catch. So he gives you a little bit of everything."

Shiancoe spent some time Saturday watching film with quarterback Tarvaris Jackson and said he was "tremendously excited" to be a focal point of the offense.

"They were looking for a versatile tight end," he said, "and I feel like that's what I can bring to the table. I can catch and I can block."

Ciurciu, meanwhile, was almost exclusively a special teams player during his four seasons in Carolina. But he played middle linebacker at Boston College, and the Vikings will give him a chance to compete at that position; 2006 starter Napoleon Harris is not expected to return. Ciurciu received a three-year contract worth $3 million, including a signing bonus of just more than $500,000.

"[i'm] just being given an opportunity to come here and to start over again," Ciurciu said, "to compete for a starting job and be a leader on special teams."

Etc.

• Childress said he spoke recently with tight end Jim Kleinsasser, who now finds himself in a crowded group of tight ends with long-term contracts. It appears the Vikings want Kleinsasser to reduce his $2.9 million base salary.

Asked if Kleinsasser would remain with the team, Childress said: "We'll just see how that goes. He's a member of the Minnesota Vikings and he's a good football player."

• Spielman on why the Vikings targeted Shiancoe over Graham: "[Graham] was up there and we decided that Visante was the guy that we wanted and wanted off the get-go. We were going to do everything we could to make sure that he came here and wasn't leaving."

• Shiancoe pronounces his full name "vi-sahn-tee SHANK-oh." His family is originally from the African nation of Liberia. He was born in England.

• Ciurciu pronounces his last name "church-choo."
