Johnson, who chose the Cowboys over the Denver Broncos, will make $3.5 million in the first season. No other contract terms available. The Vikings released Johnson last month, making room for Tarvaris Jackson, who started the final two games of last season as a rookie, and Brooks Bollinger as the top options at the position. The Vikings went 7-2 with Johnson under center in 2006 and just missed the playoffs at 9-7. He threw for 2,750 yards and nine touchdowns last season. Johnson, who won a Super Bowl with Tampa Bay in the 2002-03 season, is fifth in Vkings franchise history with 11,093 yards passing behind Fran Tarkenton, Tommy Kramer, Daunte Culpepper and Wade Wilson. Ellis, who has begun jogging and squat lifting, said Monday's workout would include some light running and field drills. But Ellis' mere return to the field served as an encouraging sign in the course of a grueling rehab that's expected to last well into the summer. The Cowboys are optimistic Ellis will make a full recovery by next season but certainly won't rush the 31-year-old linebacker's return from a career-threatening injury. "Right now I'm not concerned; they're not concerned," Ellis said. "If at this point now I couldn't squat down, if I couldn't walk, if I was still on crutches or still in a boot, then yeah, there would be some concern. But right now I can go out and jog, so I think you'd have to say we feel pretty good about it right now." Before his injury, Ellis led the Cowboys' defense in sacks in each of the previous five seasons and had a team-high 4½ sacks heading into the Cowboys' Week 10 game at Arizona last year. He left University of Phoenix Stadium on crutches and confessed genuine concern over his football future. The Cowboys' defense didn't generate the same pass rush without him and allowed 152 points and 16 touchdown passes in its last five regular-season games. Pro Bowl linebacker DeMarcus Ware received extra attention without Ellis manning the opposite edge. The Cowboys will run a modified version of the 3-4 defense under new head coach Wade Phillips next season. If healthy, Ellis is expected to play the same position as San Diego's Shawne Merriman, who recorded 27 sacks the last two years in Phillips' aggressive scheme. "One of the first things (Phillips) said when I met him is 'Greg, I noticed they weren't rushing you enough,'" Ellis said. The guy has a ton of experience, there's no question about that... but that would only make him an excellent QB Coach. Pray, PRAY that he never sees any playing time! I'm pretty stoked about the cast of characters they have to help develop Romo this year. If Romo happens to go down, Johnson isn't going to win them any games, but I don't think he will lose them any games either. Remember all the Cowboys starting WR's and TE's are better than anything that MIN had starting last year. Thanks to whoever gave the report on Ellis. I think his health has more to do with how good the Boy's D will do this year than anything else that could possibly happen this off season. Actually, I was hoping that Johnson would be in DEN to back up Cutler. It's not that he's going to be a good backup if the top guy goes down to an injury - the best you can hope out of Johnson at this point is mediocre & adequate, nothing more. It's the experience he brings to the table in camps & practice. Say what you want about Johnson, but he's lasted this long in the NFL because he's got good football knowledge & instincts.
