Borges Suspended For Two Months

Michael Paulson on Boston.com reports that the Boston Globe has suspended sportswriter Ron Borges for two months without pay for plagiarism.

The Globe’s editor, Martin Baron, said Borges had included in his ‘‘Football notes’’ column last Sunday material written by a reporter for the News Tribune of Tacoma, Wash.

"‘The Globe does not tolerate plagiarism,"’ Baron said in a statement. "Extensive passages written by the Tacoma reporter were used verbatim in the column by Borges, and that is prohibited."

According to the article, Borges is also barred from broadcast appearances over the next two months.

While Cold Hard Football Facts has been leading the charge on this, and really gone a long way in getting this story out there, it appears the issue was first noted in this ESPN.com messageboard post by a Seattle fan and trickled out from there to various other boards and websites.

While we are piling on Borges, for those that don't know, he doesn't like Belichick.

He ocassionally writes for MSNBC.com. Before the free agent signings began, here is the MSNBC comments on Thomas.

There will also be good value available this year, even at what will be the top of the pay scale. Which players seem most likely to deliver value for their services? Barring injury, here's one list of likely candidates.

Best values

1. Adalius Thomas, LB: He wants a $18 million signing bonus and will probably get it, likely from the 49ers. Wherever he goes, the 270-pound Thomas appears headed toward making an impact.

That was on March 2nd, he has him ranked as #1.

On March 4th, a day after the Pats signed Thomas, he puts a negative spin on it for the Boston audience in the Boston Globe:

More of the same?

Banking on Thomas is no sure thing

By Ron Borges | March 4, 2007

Long before the free agency period began, strong side linebacker Adalius Thomas was designated the year's premier catch by many pundits and personnel men. Perhaps he will prove to be just that, but if history is any predictor, he should be approached with caution.

Uhm, "....was designated the year's premier catch by many pundits....", that would include youself.

What an a$$clown. :D

USAToday now carrying the story.

Sports writer suspended for alleged plagiarism

BOSTON (AP) — The Boston Globe suspended veteran sports writer Ron Borges on Monday amid accusations he plagiarized part of a football column from another reporter.

The Globe's editor, Martin Baron, said in a story posted on the newspaper's website that Borges had included in his football notes column last Sunday material written by Mike Sando, a reporter for The News Tribune of Tacoma, Wash.

"The Globe does not tolerate plagiarism," Baron said in a statement. "Extensive passages written by the Tacoma reporter were used verbatim in the column by Borges, and that is prohibited."

Borges, a sports writer at the paper for 24 years, was suspended without pay for two months and barred from broadcast appearances for the same period, Baron said.

The Globe said Borges, its national football writer, used without attribution material from a notes exchange used by NFL writers.

In notes exchanges, writers typically share information about their teams with their colleagues. However, the information is usually attributed to the original paper or used as background material.

Globe sports editor Joe Sullivan said Borges was not aware the material had been published in the News-Tribune on Feb. 25.

The allegations of plagiarism first arose on a website, coldhardfootballfacts.com.

Borges declined comment to The Associated Press on Monday night.

Dan Totten, president of the Boston Newspaper Guild, said the union was standing by Borges.

"Ron Borges is a talented veteran of The Boston Globe sports pages whose work is of the highest caliber. Ron's work is widely appreciated and respected within the sports journalism world. The Boston Newspaper Guild stands with Ron and we will defend him and see that justice prevails," Totten said.

Sando, reached by telephone by the AP, declined to comment and referred questions to Dale Phelps, the News Tribune's deputy managing editor.

"It's kind of an unfortunate circumstance from my point of view," Phelps said, "but we don't have any anger or anything. For us, it's an issue for them to deal with at their paper."

Globe sports columnist Bob Ryan was suspended for one month without pay in 2003 for his remarks on a television show that the wife of New Jersey Nets guard Jason Kidd needed someone to "smack her." Ryan apologized for the comment.

In 2000, Globe columnist Jeff Jacoby was suspended for four months for failing to cite sources in a column. Patricia Smith resigned in 1998 after admitting she fabricated characters and quotes in her columns, and Mike Barnicle resigned later that year because he was unable to verify facts in a 1995 column.

Wow! I don't follow newspapers or "media pundits" -- thus I don't know the reputation of a Boston Globe. Yet, this has got to be an alarming trend, no? Patricia Smith seems to be a better fit for the Sunday comics.

Let's see.... the best defense is a good offense, so I expect the Globe to accuse Mangini of plagiarism of Bill Belichick's stratgey formulas. Hey, what's to lose? The Pats didn't suffer any for accusing the Jets of tampering with D Branch? :D

OK, kidding aside, Borges has always had it in for BB. maybe he's related to that guy in NJ who says Billy B is a home wrecker? I dunno.
