Police: Man threatened Pacman

No one hurt after pocketknife drawn

By CLAY CAREY

Staff Writer

A Spring Hill man has been arrested after police said he threatened Tennessee Titans cornerback Pacman Jones with a knife at a Franklin bowling alley.

"Mr. Jones was here just trying to be a normal customer, trying to bowl" with several other people, Franklin police detective Stephanie Cisco said.

No one was hurt during the altercation, which took place about 10:15 p.m. Friday at the Franklin Family Entertainment Center, she said.

Clayton Smith instigated the confrontation, said Cisco, who was at the bowling alley Friday night when the dispute broke out. Smith, 33, brandished a small pocket knife and "threatened to beat up Mr. Jones and to use the knife on him," Cisco said.

Smith was removed from the bowling alley. He was arrested Saturday on charges of aggravated.

His arrest history includes charges of stalking, unlawful weapon possession and drug offenses, Cisco said.

Titans Coach Jeff Fisher did not return a message from The Tennessean.

Fisher had a phone conversation with Jones on Thursday night, and Fisher and Titans chief operating officer Steve Underwood met with Jones' lawyers on Friday.

At an informal gathering with the media later Friday, Fisher said the Titans didn't want Jones to be part of the team's offseason conditioning program until the team had finished sorting through his legal issues.

Jones has a Fayetteville, Ga., court appearance on March 19 to face charges of obstructing police in a February 2006 incident.

While Jones is not a suspect in a case in Las Vegas, he has been accused by a strip club owner there of being a central figure in a melee that ended with a triple shooting and left one victim paralyzed

No-call may cost Pacman

Commentary by DAVID CLIMER

Senior Writer

For most of his two troubled years as a pro, the Titans have looked for reasons to keep Pacman Jones.

Now they seem to be looking for reasons to get rid of him. And they may have found enough of the latter.

It all could come down to Jones' failure to make a phone call. By not informing the team or the NFL office of his arrest in Fayetteville, Ga., in February 2006, he may have violated a clause in his contract.

And in this climate, it could be the last straw. If it is determined that this would allow the Titans to jettison Jones without taking a significant financial hit, separation papers could be drawn up.

The incident in question occurred on Feb. 6, 2006, and Jones was charged with one felony count of obstruction of a police officer and two counts of misdemeanor obstruction. News of this did not surface until recently.

His guilt or innocence remains to be determined. But Jones already is guilty of violating NFL protocol by not notifying the league or the Titans of the charges.

Asked on Friday how this should have been handled, Titans Coach Jeff Fisher said:

"Typically speaking, if there is a situation like this, it's the player's responsibility to inform the club and the league. That did not take place."

I guess Pacman figured it would all just go away.

He should know better by now. They keep score in the NFL — on the field and off.

It's Fisher's call

I'm taking Fisher at his word when he says he did not know until recently about Jones' arrest. Players are not required to make check-ins during the offseason.

Unless they are arrested.

Still, somebody dropped the ball. When you have a loose cannon like Pacman on your roster, you keep tabs on him 24/7. No, you can't make him wear an ankle bracelet (the NFL Players Association has to draw the line somewhere, I guess), but you'd better have somebody on call.

Already, we are hearing that Pacman's latest meanderings off the straight and narrow have polarized the organization. There are whispers that owner Bud Adams feels he has too much money and time invested in Jones to cut and run, while the coach is ready to move on minus one very talented — but very troubled — cornerback/return man.

I don't buy it. This is Fisher's mess to clean up. If he says it's in the team's best interest to cut Jones, the owner will go along with it. That's how much Bud trusts his coach's judgment.

"It's not an easy situation, believe me," Fisher said, "but we have to keep all of our options open."

One of those options being kept open is closing the book on Pacman Jones.

Bowling alley ?? There is strippers there ?

After the Vegas incident I read an article that mentioned he went bowling with a bunch of veterans once a week. Supposedly he behaves fine when he's with these guys. I wonder if this was one of those nights?
