Soy Sauce

About 3 years ago my wife began having severe reactions to certain foods. This causes her tongue to swell to the point it could choke her to death. She has to be very careful what she eats. The worst reaction comes from peanuts. She found that if she eats ham from pigs that were feed mostly peanuts it causes a reaction. She also has allergies to corn, soy and shell fish.

The reason for this post is to try to find a substitute for Soy sauce so she can eat chinese food again. Home cooked of course. If anyone knows what may work it would be greatly appreciated. :D

Not sure what that is but we will check it out. The other stuff mentioned has Soy in it. Thanks for the efforts so far.

It's basically anchovy extract, sugar, and water. It's more salty tasting than soy sauce, but adds a lot of flavor. Just checked the back of the bottle, no soy, no peanuts, no gluten, no nothing.....should be good to go!

Thai Kitchen is a brand I buy. In with the soy sauce at a grocer I'd imagine.

Thai Fish Sauce

That's what I was going to say. Mind you, the stuff is very potent. My favorite brand by far is 3 Crabs Brand. It's somewhat more expensive than the others but ultimately you're talkiing about 3.50 vs 1.89 for something that should last you at least a few weeks.

If you like chinese food but she can't hack soy, look into vietnamese or thai food. Insanely delicious but based on fish sauce instead of soy sauce.

Fish sauce is da bomb but like detlef said, it is strong.

A trick I learned from Martin Yan involving fish sauce. If you're in a hurry and don't want to prepare an elaborate sauce for you fish, bake or broil the fish and drizzle a little thai fish sauce over it. I do mean a little. You'll be very surprised at the taste.

A similar idea is to make an anchovy butter to put on grilled swordfish...mmmm....

uh-oh-it only lasts a few weeks? We keep it in the fridge for a year before throwing it out. Made a Thai Soup with about 9 month old fish sauce two nights ago and hubby and I are still alive and well with no multiple trips to the bathroom.

Don't refridgerate fish sauce, it will crystalize. It will keep for two YEARS in a dark cupboard! It takes me a year to go through a bottle. Buy the most expensive (which usually simply means it has more fish sauce and no filler crap). The supermarkets here in NY carry the low quality stuff. Find an asian market for the good stuff or order on line. Oyster sauce is another less strong tasting option, but I haven't carefully checked the ingredients.

PS: Forget the oyster sauce... it has soy in it.

Oh no, like Rovers says, it lasts a long time. I was simply saying that even if you use it somewhat often, a bottle will last you a while. In fact, it will likely last most much, much longer than a few weeks. Sorry for the confusion.
