max
Could this possibly escalate and lead to a potential hold out situation? If it does and depending on the extent of it this could be a big impact on FWP owners. Tomlin doesn't seem too concerned but it is something to monitor in the off season for FWP owners. Faneca skips voluntary workouts All-Pro guard could be angling for a new deal Wednesday, March 21, 2007 By Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette They're voluntary workouts and, while most of the Steelers have attended the first two days under new coach Mike Tomlin's direction, one missing player has drawn the most attention. All-Pro guard Alan Faneca, an offensive co-captain, has not attended the workouts that began Monday and have drawn all but a few players. Under normal circumstances, it might not even be noted, but Faneca publicly questioned the Steelers' decision to bypass his line coach, Russ Grimm, for the job that Tomlin ultimately got. Also, negotiations to extend Faneca's contract, which has one year left, have gone nowhere. All that, combined with the cryptic response by his agent yesterday, could add up to why Faneca has not yet attended, or even if he plans to. Agent Rick Smith said yesterday that he would not comment about Faneca at any time, now or in the future, and that any comments would have to come from "Rooney or Kevin Colbert." Faneca will earn $4,375,000 this year, including $1 million paid him this month in a roster bonus. But Faneca, who has made the past six Pro Bowls, no doubt has noticed the whopping contracts that other guards -- without his credentials -- have been getting recently. Eric Steinbach left the Cincinnati Bengals to sign a seven-year, $49 million contract with the Cleveland Browns. Derrick Dockery left the Washington Redskins for the Buffalo Bills for the same kind of deal, including $18.5 million guaranteed. Neither has made the Pro Bowl. Tomlin said he talked to Faneca and was satisfied with his reason for not attending the workouts. "Everyone that was not here called in and gave legitimate reasons why, but, at the same time, this is voluntary," Tomlin said. "It's about guys individually getting better. One thing that the guys do respect is when you do show up and you work together, you build a little chemistry and camaraderie. And that's what it's about. Everybody just wants to know that everybody else that has a stake in it is doing everything they can to get better." If it does become a holdout situation, it would be a HUGH problem for the Steelers and Willie Parker. Faneca is phenomenal and is one of the top 5-10 offensive lineman in the NFL. Thanks to the ridiculous contract Steinbach got from Cleveland, Pittsburgh has zero chance or resigning a 30+ year old Faneca to his last contract. In this case, I think Pittsburgh should look to trade him this year to get something for him. I a, willing to bet at least a 2nd rounder can be had. max
Still something for Parker owners to keep an eye on. http://postgazette.com/pg/07110/779711-66.stm Steelers' Faneca boycotts voluntary minicamp Friday, April 20, 2007 By Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Guard Alan Faneca boycotted the first day of Steelers minicamp today and is not expected to participate in any of the practices under new coach Mike Tomlin this weekend. This first minicamp is voluntary but the next one May 11-13 is mandatory. Faneca is unhappy with his contract, according to several of his teammates. Faneca has one year left on his deal and also is not happy with the lack of negotiations on an extension. Also missing from today's practice sessions were safety Troy Polamalu and linebacker Clark Haggans for personal reasons. The Steelers practice twice today, twice Saturday and once on Sunday. jaxfactor
Posturing, gentlemen. Pure posturing. I do, however, agree that Cleveland and Washington both overpaying(understatement) for guards in the offseason will hurt the Steelers chances of resigning him. Dan Asswhipe- er Snyder will offer Faneca 8-10 mil after this season.

jaxfactor
and they will again finish under .500.. and again.. and again.. and again.. Exactly. It must be hateful to be a Redskins fan as long as that jackass is the owner. Thank God for the Rooneys!
SteelerMurf
Faneca was in town at some point this week, I guess he didn't really come to practice with the rest of the team? http://www.timesonline.com/site/news.cfm?n...id=478568&rfi=6 Edited April 23, 2007 by SteelerMurf
