godtomsatan
Charlotte Observer story. Panthers agree to terms with QB David CarrPAT YASINSKAS pyasinskas@charlotteobserver.com Quarterback David Carr, the first overall pick in the 2002 draft, agreed to terms on a two-year contract with the Carolina Panthers early Friday morning, according to a league source. Carr, 27, made the decision after returning from a two-day visit with the Seattle Seahawks and meeting with his wife at their California home late Thursday night. Carr had visited with the Panthers Monday and Tuesday. The financial terms of the deal weren’t immediately available. The Panthers obviously don’t view Carr as the typical backup. Coach John Fox has said several times that Jake Delhomme, who struggled at times last season, remains the starter. But Carr, who has made 75 career starts, could provide a viable alternative if Delhomme struggles again. That’s something the Panthers lacked last season when Delhomme was forced to miss three games with a thumb injury. Backup Chris Weinke was elevated to the starting lineup, but the Panthers lost his first two starts and let him attempt only seven passes in his final start. Weinke was released after the season. The Panthers also had Joey Harrington, the third pick of the 2002 draft in for a visit, but Carr clearly was their top target. Sources have said the Panthers view Carr as a player who still has plenty of upside and could flourish with the right team and the right offensive system. Although there was talk Carr could land with teams such as Oakland, Detroit or Cleveland where he might have a better initial shot at a starting job, the quarterback wanted to land in a situation that presented the best chance of resurrecting his career. Carr came out of Fresno State viewed as a franchise quarterback. The expansion Houston Texans used their first pick on him (one pick before the Panthers selected defensive end Julius Peppers). But Carr’s career never took off in Houston. Surrounded by poor offensive lines, he was under constant pressure from defenses. Coach Gary Kubiak stayed with Carr last season after replacing Dom Capers. But the Texans decided to part ways with Carr after making a trade with Atlanta for Matt Schaub and handing him the starting job. Carr was released last month. Carr did show some progress under Kubiak, completing a career-best 68.3 of his passes and posting an 82.1 quarterback rating. For his career, Carr has completed 60 percent of his passes with a 75.5 quarterback rating. While completing 1,243 of 2,070 passes, Carr has thrown for 59 touchdowns with 65 interceptions. The Panthers will go to training camp with second-year pro Brett Basanez as the third quarterback behind Delhomme and Carr.
peepinmofo
Charlotte Observer story. Lets see... Be a starter in Oakland, Miami, Minnesota, or maybe a few others, or play 2nd fiddle in CAR? Maybe he didnt get interest from other teams, but that would surprise me. This doesnt make much sense in my eyes. Does he think Delhomme is fading because he had one not so great year? PSULions
I think this is a good signing for the Panthers. Having watched Weinke the last two home games last year.... he had to go. If we would have had a quality backup QB in place, we may not have won those games, but we would have been more competitive without a doubt. I still believe that Jake will be the starter, but he didn't have much competition with Weinke as the only viable option, but now he will be forced to elevate his game or risk getting benched in favor of Carr. It is only a two year deal so it should have much of cap impact as he is pretty much guaranteed a spot on the roster through 2008. He certainly was the best of the QBs on the market and I am glad that he opted to go with the Panthers.
DemonKnight
I actually think Carr might be the starter for this team by opening day.
Savage Beatings
(sigh) Even with Brad Childress talking down Carr recently, I had still held out hope that maybe that was just a negotiating smoke screen and that the Vikings would eventually bring him in. I just keep seeing missed opportunity after missed opportunity for the Vikes, while they pass over obvious moves and bring in semi-talented rejects instead. We sat through a year of Doug Peterson at QB. It worked out in Philly. Hopefully for your sake Childress does the same thing but I can bet you won't be signing any big name WRs And I like the Carr signing. I think he can play, he just needs a better opportunity. Maybe Fox gets tired of Jake's erratic play and finally has a viable option
Azazello1313
I actually think Carr might be the starter for this team by opening day. i doubt it will be opening day, but it could very well happen over the course of the season if delhomme struggles, or more likely still, at the start of next season. The Irish Doggy
I think this is largely a name signing that tends to scare us in fantasy football land. The whole Carolina offense was off last year, not just Delhomme. Jake's still the guy to have there IMO.

PSULions
Or maybe they told him something that they didn't tell everyone else? I think his opportunity to start in Carolina is better than in Seattle with Hasslebeck running the show. Jake is still a good QB IMO, but I don't think it hurts to push him to improve this summer. Competition fosters improved play and Carr will be out to show he can do the job with better players and a better OL, which I now will be a priority for the Panthers to upgrade. I think it makes perfect sense. It's not about Delhomme being on a short leash, but he could get hurt (again) and either way, the pressure on Carr is a LOT lower. Further, Carr would have an actual team around him for a change - none of that "carry this POS team on your back despite a lack of support" BS. And who knows what will happen w/Delhomme in a year or 2? If nothing else, his body gets to see what going thru autumn not in pain is like for a change. As for CAR, they get one helluva backup for (I suspect) not very much money. Edited April 6, 2007 by BeeR

Yet someplace where he might get a shot sometime during the season.

SuperChiefs
I actually think Carr might be the starter for this team by opening day. Not going to happen, unless there is some kind of injury. They didn't take Carr this early to create a QB controversy -- but they did want to make certain he had plenty of time to learn the playbook. Delhomme will start the season, but he will also be on a very very short leash. If he falters the first three or four games, watch for Carr to enter. Carolina simply has too much talent in their receivers to permit a QBs performance to pull them down. SuperChiefs / John

PantherDave
I like this alot, and said that Hurney would most likely make a play for him after the Schaub deal. So, no surprise here, and yes, Jake is the clear cut starter, but now there is a guy on the roster who could actually be good enough to take that job away. Make absolutlely no doubt that Carr was made the scapegaot in Houston to cover up some lousy personel moves and just abhorent building of an O line. The long passes that tend to have Smith and Carter wait on..Carr can get there with zip and hit them in stride. Jake will have to get better now and while he is the #1, it's a message that he better have a better season. Jake will be learning a new offensive scheme, so he has no advantage there over Carr.....well a little since a few plays are going to be kept from the old system. This is a major upgrade at QB, for we have two legit #1's on the team.

That is the FIRST time Ive EVER seen an ad for the Winthrop Eagles. Anyway, Carr wont start this year unless Delhomme struggles, or gets hurt. Next year is probably a different story.
