Fatman
The Green Bay Packers Tuesday signed linebacker Nick Barnett to a long-term contract extension. Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations Ted Thompson made the announcement. Barnett has led Green Bay in tackles three of his four seasons, posting 631 career stops. He has also recorded eight sacks, seven interceptions, six fumble recoveries and 29 passes defensed. I say they both stay. It will be interesting to see what happens there. Barnett to SLB is the most logical. You'd have to think that they want to get Hodge on the field. It may not work, but even if Hodge plays 2 downs and Barnett goes in the middle on 3rd they should see how it works.
keggerz
will being signed to the long term deal make him easier to trade? I am not 100% sold that he will remain in GB
Fatman
will being signed to the long term deal make him easier to trade? I am not 100% sold that he will remain in GB Organizationally, the Pack has always liked Barnett. He's had issues with the city over his club, but from everything that he's said recently I would expect him to want to stay in GB. I would agree with Randall that camp will going a long way to figuring out roles. On paper, Hawk, Hodge and Barnett give us the best LB corps, so I would be surprised if they broke it up by trading Nick. Randall
From JS Online Terms of the deal weren't known, but Barnett was believed to have received a signing bonus of at least $10 million and a yearly average between $5 million and $6 million. "I think both sides walked away thinking a long-term committment was in place," said Barnett agent Chuck Price. "We're very pleased to reach this deal." That would give GB a pretty strong & young LB corps. The thing holding up Barnett from being moved was his concern about what it would do to his numbers with his impending FA next year. This resolves that issue. :fingerscrossedHodgeowner:

I would think Hodge a 2 down LB, but one who tackles like a fiend.

I think he will still have an issue with moving positions??

I think he will still have an issue with moving positions?? I'd have a very strong feeling that the whole situation was discussed prior to the extension being signed. Now that he's signed his extension, he's got an obligation to play where the Packers want him to play. That may still be MLB, if Hodge doesn't pan out there. I think he will still have an issue with moving positions?? He said he didn't want to go outside because it would hurt his stats and cost him contract-wise. There could be other issues, but I agree with BB that had to be addressed before signing. We don't know the result of any conversation yet but Hodge is really just a MLB. If they want him used this had to be worked out.

The answer is no now, but players can learn new positions if it benefits the team to do it. I posed that in case Barnett doesn't play well there in TC. It doesn't matter to me who plays where(I don't have any of them in fantasy), I was just wondering if they would try it.

Swiss Cheezhead
I don't see Barnett being traded either. He proved a lot to the team playing hurt last year (even if it caused his FF numbers to dip in IDP leagues). As for the position switch, I'd agree with BB. Now that he's re-signed (not "resigned" ), I can't see how he could argue with playing anywhere the team needs him. I'll continue to maintain that Barnett's previous experience at SLB was in the discussion immediately before they drafted Hodge, and I'm sure it came up again when they discussed signing the extension. All that said, I wouldn't be surprised to see Barnett to be the starting MLB again this year, and then move to Sam in '08. One way or another, I think the team will announce the switch before TC, as opposed to making it a "competition" of sorts.

If TT thinks he could improve the team by doing so I think he would consider it. but don't see it right now. I wouldn't be shocked if he did it later. Swiss Cheezhead
Let's not forget that Brady Poppinga did very well last season after some struggles early on. Which is why I still think the '08 starting LBs will be Hawk (W), Barnett (M), and Poppinga (S). If one of them gets hurt, though, I think Hodge goes to the middle regardless. If it's Hawk or Poppinga, Barnett would play either outside position.
