MLB Changes for 2007

Broncos LB D.J. Williams will move to middle linebacker after Al Wilson's release.

Runner-up for Rookie of the Year a few years ago, Williams has been relatively quiet at strong-side linebacker the last two years. Playing in the middle suits his pursuit skills and will make him a far better IDP option.

Barrett Ruud-LB- Buccaneers Apr. 1 - 9:07 am et

The Bucs reportedly want Barrett Ruud to be their new starting middle linebacker.

Judging by how infrequently he was used last season, we thought the staff had soured on Ruud but the Tampa Tribune reports the Bucs are set to undergo a major youth movement on defense. Cato June is assured of a starting job and Jaime Winborn, 27, will play more. Shelton Quarles, Derrick Brooks, and Greg Spires' roster spots may be in jeopardy.

E.J. Henderson-LB- Vikings Mar. 29 - 10:06 am et

Coach Brad Childress confirmed that E.J. Henderson will be Minnesota's middle linebacker next season.

That will open up a spot on the outside for Chad Greenway. Henderson blossomed under defensive coordinator Mike Tomlin, now Pittsburgh's head coach. This should keep Henderson a fine IDP option.

I am still not sold on Ruud or his tackling abilities.

keep any eye on the situation in zona as the coach is on record saying that they will also be utilizing the 3/4

depending on who lands where Gerald Hayes could take a big hit downward...however if he lands the LILB slot in the 3/4 his value would also increase dramatically

Ahmad Brooks story

The Bengals are hopeful they finally have the answer at the all-important middle-linebacker position.

He is Ahmad Brooks, a second-year pro and the third- round pick in the league's supplemental draft last July. The use of that pick precludes the Bengals from having a third-round pick April 28.

Still, there's a sense Brooks has first-round talent and might have gone in Round 1 this year had he been able to stay in college.

After signing with the Bengals two weeks before training camp opened, Brooks made five starts and played in 11 games as a rookie last season. He had one sack among his 46 tackles.

The Bengals expect even more from Brooks this season.

"I'm going to take it on," Brooks said after a workout Wednesday. "I'm glad the opportunity is there for me. I want to live up to the expectations."

At 260 pounds, Brooks can run, jump and tackle. The question - as it was with Thurman - is whether Brooks can stay out of trouble off the field. Amid allegations of Josh Gordon use, he was kicked off the University of Virginia team a year ago and forced to enter the supplemental draft.

Brooks' behavior since joining the Bengals has been exemplary.

"He's here early. He puts in extra time. He does the work he's supposed to," Lewis said....

Patrick Willis-LB- Player Apr. 19 - 9:06 am et

If the Bills draft Patrick Willis in the first round, they'll keep him at middle linebacker.

There's been some thought that Willis could play outside but his skills are perfect for a Cover 2 MIKE linebacker. Angelo Crowell would play the strong side with Keith Ellison the favorite at weak-side linebacker.

If Denver trades up with SF they will too. He may not be there when Buffalo picks. Carolina may move up with SF too.

Ahmad Brooks-LB- Bengals Apr. 26 - 12:27 pm et

The Bengals feel comfortable entering the season with Ahmad Brooks as their starting middle linebacker.

The team likes his upside and has been impressed with Brooks' work ethic so far this offseason. If he can post numbers close those Odell Thurman did in 2005, Brooks has potential to be a stud in IDP leagues.
