Dad/Kid stuff is not to be messed with. :D

If there were more parents/offspring with this kind of connection, there'd be faaaaar fewer problems in the world. :D

I agree. Family and tradition out rank photo ops with the commissioner at the draft. Less than 10 are invited and he is doing what 95% of the picks are that day-waiting to be called.

They can still call him and it looks like NFL Network will be there to film him. Fans can still cheer the selection. They only thing I see missing is the handshake with the commissioner.

NFL Network has reported he won't interrupt his annual fishing trip on Lake Michigan so NFL Network with be on the boat with him. :D

Hope they don't scare the fish away...

Seriously, great call Joe. Spending this day with Dad is an awesome thing.

I've seen this create a huge stir in some arenas.

Who really frickin' cares? You see the kid walk up to the podium, he gets his #1 jersey presented by the owner or GM, and everyone has huge smiles on their face. Then they interview the kid, and he says how happy he is to be picked by his team and how he hopes can can contribute in some way to them winning the Super Bowl next season. Then they show the crying Mom. Camera off - time for the next pick.

It almost never adds to the quality of draft day, except when someone gets picked who hates the team he's picked by, like Eli Manning getting picked by SD & it looking like someone fed him a double-dose of a castor oil enema.

I say good for him. He's put his relationship with his Dad above a banal & meaningless appearance in NY. In any case, it wouldn't significantly affect my enjoyment on draft day one way or the other.

From another story-

Joe Thomas won't miss not being part of the show, either.

If Eric and Joe have any luck on the lake, they might be cleaning salmon at the family home when Joe gets the call from the team that drafts him.

"You know what?" Joe Thomas asked over the telephone the other day. "For me, the whole NFL draft show is not really what I'm all about. I don't define myself by where I go in the draft.

"I define myself by how I play in the NFL. I don't want the NFL draft to be the celebration of the end of my career. I'd rather spend the day at home with my family and have a last few days before I'm shipped off and get ready for the NFL season.

"I'm not preparing to have a big celebration on NFL draft day. That's not what I'm all about. I want the transition to be smooth from college to the pros, and not make a big deal about the draft."

Thomas doesn't have a preference over which team drafts him because he has no control over it.

"It's not that I don't care," he said. "My ability to help myself in the draft has been taken out of my hands."

Thomas and his agent, Peter Schaffer of Denver, have talked about what Thomas will do on draft day.

Suppose the salmon are hitting, and Thomas is in a fishing boat on Lake Michigan?

"He advised me that it might be a good idea to have a cell phone with me," Thomas said.

I can see it now ... he has a big 30lb salmon on his line when his phone starts ringing.

He sounds like a kind of guy who'd let it roll to VM so he can land his fish, and then call the guy back.

I grew up in Michigan, the only way the best fishing will be interrupted is if they're drafting him at 6am.

:D

I grew up in Wisconsin. "Going fishin'" is code for going drinking beer, smoking cigars, & bull*****ing without any possibility of females, cell phones, etc interferring. If you happen to actually land a fish or two while fishing, it's a huge bonus but not required. In fact, too many fish can interfere with the aforementioned activites also.

And going hunting in Hurley was all the above plus gambling. :D

It also sounds like attending a football game game at Camp Randall(the game need not interfere with the partying).

I understand what Thomas is saying, but I don't know that he should be applauded for this. Like others have said, this isn't the run-of-the-mill thing. It's the pinnacle of achievement for a football player to be drafted by the NFL, especially in the first round. You can go fishing on Sunday. Saturday, go to NYC, make your appearance, talk to the media. Leave.

I'm not all that high on the guy anyway. I'm predicting him to be no better than an average LT, if not an outright bust.

If I was his dad, I would suggest that we both go to NY for the draft and then fish on Sunday. How cool would that be for a father?\

Sounds like someone may miss out on voluntary mini-camps :D

Do you guys not get this? He's an O-lineman. This behavior is downright appropriate. Hell, I'll bet Shanahan is doing back handsprings trying to move up to draft the guy.

I'm not going to say it's inappropriate behavior, but it's not exactly unselfish behavior either.

Although I think its weird that he would rather be fishing over doing something thousands of people would give their left nut to do, I dont consider it selfish. Selfish is worrying about your own needs over the needs of others. I am not sure who he is hurting by not being there. And he is hardly the first person to skip the draft. He just used fishing as his excuse.

Maybe he did, but whatever they decided is fine with me. Most draft picks watch the draft from home and if they want to do that I don't have a problem with it.

I don't think he sees it that way. From what I see he sees it as a media event and he would rather concetrate on football.
