Randall
fixed This seems more of a publicity stunt than genuine. If it were Sturgeon weekend then I could see it being genuine. What is this, their 3rd Annual NFL Draft Day Fishing Trip? But who really cares. I hate watching the selected players ride the short bus anywho. Noone should care. It is an honor to be invited but these days with video feeds players can be interviewed most anywhere and appear to the fans. Outside of meeting the Commissioner at the podium I don't really see what is lost if he doesn't appear. He'll get a call from the drafting team and will probably be shown in video form. MikesVikes
It's a good thing that the NFL doesn't open up the season on Labor Day anymore. That's a family day no doubt. Sure hope he doesn't have any rules about playing on Sundays as well. Edited April 20, 2007 by MikesVikes
Bronco Billy
While I agree that Thomas isn't going to be as dominant as most top 5 OL picks, he's too talented to be an outright bust. His awesome footwork and powerful lower body is going to guarantee that he succeeds in defending against the pass-rush, which is by far the most important aspect to being a LT. However, I doubt he'll be a dominating run-blocker. Robert Gallery he is not. Nor is he Jonathan Ogden. The knock on UW linemen has been they are soft. Their 300 lb bodies dominate at the college level, but it obviously takes more than being 300 lbs to succeed at the NFL level. The rumor on campus is that they are big juicers while at UW, then go off the juice before going pro. But considering that Thomas' upper body is a bit on the weak side, I doubt this is true about him. (though he did bench press more than most of the offensive linemen on his high school football team) Thomas, C Johnson, Landry, & Willis are about as close to sure things as there are in this draft. Thomas goes a legit 310+ lbs, is 6'-6"+, and can turn a sub-5 second 40. His footwork & technique are outstanding, and he has a definitive mean streak in run blocking, and he's developed one hell of a punch in pass blocking. He's got a frame that will allow him to add 10-20 lbs without losing a step. He managed 28 reps @ 225 lbs at the combine with his "weak" upper body. The guy started his career at WIS as a TE, then shifted to DE before he settled in as the dominant OT in the country. This guy is someone's next LT for the next decade. @ anyone who compares this guy to Gallery. There will be some very unhappy LBs waiting around the corner when this guy's future team runs the counter-trey. Chavez
I grew up in Wisconsin. "Going fishin'" is code for going drinking beer, smoking cigars, & bull*****ing without any possibility of females, cell phones, etc interferring. If you happen to actually land a fish or two while fishing, it's a huge bonus but not required. In fact, too many fish can interfere with the aforementioned activites also. BB is wise. The Fisherman's Hell is the devil allows you to bring only bait OR beer, not both.
Skilly
I like it. It will be a nice change of pace from watching all the homeys slouching around in their FUBU sweatsuits with a hundred gravy-training moochers hanging on their every word, waiting for the dude's cell phone to ring. I think Thomas is the real deal and will be a solid pro.
