LaDainian Tomlinson Walked Away From Madden Cover

Posted Apr 18th 2007 2:03PM by Michael David Smith

Filed under: Chargers, Titans, Breaking News

It turns out that Madden 2008 cover boy Vince Young was not EA Sports' first choice. Before Young got the video game endorsement, Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson was offered the opportunity to appear on the cover but turned it down.

According to CNBC (via Deadspin), Tomlinson doesn't believe in the Madden Curse, but he does believe that he deserves to be well compensated for the use of his image, and he balked at the payment EA Sports offered. Players who appear on the cover usually get $100,000 to $200,000 to make various promotional appearances to help sell the game, and Tomlinson didn't feel that was enough to make it worth his while.

Whatever his reasons, some Charger fans are very happy.

Translated: Tomlinson DOES believe in the Madden Curse and wants nothing to do with it.

Wierd statement from LT. Though he still hasn't tarnished at all in my image that he is one of the most classy players in the league, him declining because of financials is unusual.

It's not weird at all. For someone who probably makes $200,000+ per game, why would he want to go around promoting a video game (his free time in the offseason) for 1 game check? It's not like this is for charity or something :D

That's probably because it is not his real reason. He's a smart man and knows all about the curse. THAT's the real reason.

That said, the cash is not a lot for the use of the image alone. Add that to promotional appearances -- and all the BS he'd have to go through all season long from the media about the curse -- and it simply is not worth it to him.

Can you imagine what that it would be like, media hanging onto every play, waiting to see if he gets hurt? If he gets dinged and missed a few plays, the questions after the game about if the curse had anything to do with it?

I wouldn't want that distraction -- especially since me and my teammates are trying to win a Super Bowl this year.

He probably doesn't believe in it but why take the chance?

It's like standing on a rainy golf course with a metal putter and saying "lightning isn't going to strike".

Well he isn't on any other advertisements and I'm sure money isn't the reason. Or is it?
