A fundamental question on kickers in FF

Why do we have kickers in fantasy football? For me, it's more of a hassle than anything else to deal with them. The volatility at the top is the highest of any position, making ranking them even more frustrating. In my dynasty league, I currently have none and am trying to be cheap about acquiring a couple, which hasn't worked so far. When I'm watching a game and my kickers scores I smile. Then I immediately hate myself for cheering for a kicker. I really think that my fantasy experience would be unchanged if kickers were removed.

So why are they included? Is it to account for all of the scoring that's done in a game? Trying to further emulate the real game? Sheer boredom?

There's a BOTH league that doesn't use kickers, isn't there?

I assume it's to account for all the scoring. It's another facet of the game. Don't know what else to say about it.

If there is, I immediately respect those guys.

Back in the very early 90's I was in a league where all Kickers were the first players picked off the board in the draft. :D

I've got nothing against Kickers... I suppose you could eliminate them from the equation, but at the very least it adds an extra element of strategy to the draft, and each season there always seems to be one guy who has a monster week to help a team win by a single point.

No reason to eliminate the position IMO even though its the one aspect of FF that requires the least amount of planning.

A win by 3 points or less is just as sweet as an absolute crushing of a fellow FF'er, imo. There's nothing more frustrating than losing to someone just because Jax couldn't find the end zone all day and you just happened to have Scobee in for a 12 point game.

Having your opponent muttering "Stupid Josh Scobee!" on Monday (or Tuesday) is just too sweet.

Kickers are drafted mainly because they they do mirror NFL scoring - originally many leagues only scored TD's and kicking points. The reality is that they are almost impossible to pick other than the top guy last year ain't going to be this year. But another reality is that they all score roughly the same (about 110 to 120 points) and they add a flavor each week because one or two always have a big week that would be nearly impossible to predict. They add a flavor. And they should never, ever be drafted early.

Well put. An NFL team has a kicker...why wouldn't a fantasy team? He scores points so why not have one?

What do you know about fantasy football? I draft my kickers in round 3 or 4.

100% agreed!

Now...what are your thoughts on when one should draft a back-up QB?

Back in the very early 90's

I play in a league that started in '89 (TD with small performance bonus) before all the crazy scoring of performance leagues. We mirror the NFL as closely as possible. Kickers score a ton of points in the real NFL. Our final scores are like 38-31 and such instead of 160-155. When's the last time an NFL team scored 155 anyway? I enjoy the league alot because each TD is celebrated just like the real NFL. Yes, it sucks when a guy vultures TDs, etc, etc...every argument on why performance scoring was implemented, but them the breaks.

Our scoring is set up so it works out nearly perfect every year that 1 QB = 2 RB = 3 WR = 1 K. Some teams do try to guess the hot kicker for the year and it can put you over the top. You do have to worry about when and what kicker to draft more than a performance league. I normally wait til the end of the draft, of course since I can never predict kickers. I won a ton of games thanks to Robbie Gould being so hot.

Plus, you can watch Sportscenter and almost figure out who won and lost like back in the day before the USA Today came out. :D:D

It's along the lines of allowing commie homos from Madison WI to own a team in your keeper leagues.

This is interesting...I can see the value in a setup like this as opposed to performance scoring - good kickers would make a difference. In performance leagues, they're so interchangable it's tough to put much importance into them.

Sounds like mirroring real football is the biggest reason, which makes sense. That doesn't mean that I like kickers any more, however. :D

Afraid I must disagree with the last part. One can not only have too many kickers.... one cannot draft a kicker too early. Especially in those leagues that have weird scoring for them. I mind the year I drafted a K in the first round. Because of the crazy K scoring the guy led me to the SB. Was over the top each and every week...... so draft a K early and often.... that's my motto.

Agreed...and to that I'd add that there is NO need to ever draft a RB before round 10. It's such an unimportant position in FF, why waste an earlier pick on them?
