ROUND 1 No. 1 (1st overall): Eli Manning, QB, MississippiLess than an hour after the Chargers took Manning, the N.Y. Giants drafted Philip Rivers and the two teams consummated a trade that brought Rivers to the Chargers along with a third-round pick and the Giants' first-and fifth-round picks in 2005. The '05 first-rounder was used to select linebacker Shawne Merriman, a Pro Bowler in each of his first two seasons. The fifth-round pick was traded to Tampa Bay for left tackle Roman Oben, who started every game until suffering a foot injury midway through the '05 season. ROUND 2 No. 3 (35th): Igor Olshansky, DT, Oregon Now considered one of the league's elite defensive ends. ROUND 3 No. 2 (65th): Nate Kaeding, K, Iowa With the choice from the Giants, the Chargers took Kaeding, who has made 67-of-78 field-goal attempts in three seasons and made the Pro Bowl after '06. No. 3 (66th): Nick Hardwick, C, Purdue Hardwick has started 45 of 50 games since and made the Pro Bowl last season. ROUND 4 No. 2 (98th): Shaun Phillips, LB, Purdue Phillips emerged as a star in '06, finishing second in the league among linebackers with 111/2 sacks. ROUND 5 No. 1 (133rd): Dave Ball, DE, UCLA Ball spent the last half of the '04 season on injured reserve and was released in November 2005. Ball signed with the Carolina Panthers last month. No. 22 (154th): Michael Turner, RB, No. Illinois The Chargers took Turner with the draft pick acquired from Miami in exchange for Junior Seau. An excellent backup to LaDainian Tomlinson, he is the object of many teams' affections and could be traded by Saturday. ROUND 6 No. 4 (169th): Ryan Krause, TE, Nebraska-Omaha Krause showed promise but was oft-injured and let go this offseason. ROUND 7 No. 3 (204th): Ryon Bingham, DT, Nebraska Bingham has become Jamal Williams' No. 1 backup and will get at least another year to show if he might someday take over. No. 8 (209th): Shane Olivea, OT, Ohio State With pick acquired from Atlanta for receiver Trevor Gaylor, the Chargers selected Olivea, who has started at right tackle all but one game since. No. 53 (254th): Carlos Joseph, OT, Miami Joseph never made it off the practice squad and was most recently playing for the Las Vegas Gladiators of the Arena League. That was a good one, but the article from the SD Union-Tribune today that started this thread makes a good case for that Charger draft to be in the top 20 too. Well, if the criteria is number of HoFers that came out of it, it'd be pretty tough to do that from a draft of < 10 yrs ago. Now, are you talking "team" draft, or overall draft? Really, you can't judge a draft until about 3-4 years down the road, so the 10 year rule gives you about a 6-year window to work in. Anyway, using that, the '99 draft had some fantastic OVERALL talent - just looking at the prospect list, you get McNabb, Bailey, Chris Claiborne, Edge, Kearse, Chris Mcallister, Torry Holt, John Tait, Booger McFarland, Damien Woody, Al Wilson, Dre Bly, Jon Jansen, Mike Peterson, Patrick Kerney....a pretty impressive roster of talent, and I haven't moved past the top 40 prospects yet. It should be. Free agency isn't their fault and the fact they have several good drafts allowed Brees to leave. The draft should be taken wholly on it's own merit. It may not but it should. Actually, they have that draft as the 17th best. It's the 4th one listed, but they counted down from 20.
