spain
Tennessee Titans: The largest needs on the Titans going into the draft were WR, DB, and DE. Most pundits believed that they would take a WR in the first round. I didnt want to take a WR that early and was hoping that Aaron Ross, CB, Texas would be the pick. My worst fears were that they would take Ted Ginn Jr. Thankfully, Miami made the bonehead pick of the draft and took Ginn. Ross was there for us at 1.19, but instead we took his teammate Michael Griffin. That was a real curveball because nobody had mentioned Griffin going this high or to the Titans. I like the pick because we needed somebody to replace one of the biggest liabilities on the team Lamont Thompson. I am happy with that pick. Then the Titans stole Chris Henry in round 2. With the departure of Travis Henry and probably Chris Brown, we desperately needed another RB. Chris Henry is a welcome addition to couple with Lendale White. Now we have a strong 1-2 punch in the backfield. I like that pick as well. I am happy so far. How did your team do in the drafts first day? Skilly
Denver: Two defensive ends and an O-lineman. I like it. That's the way to build a team...from the inside out. Jarvis Moss and Tim Crowder should both be able to excell in Denver's 4-3, and will provide some much needed youth at the position. Ryan Harris, the tackle from Notre Dame, seems like a solid pick though I don't know much about him. I don't know where they plan to line him up---Lepsis should be back from injury at left tackle. Maybe they try him out at right tackle to replace Foster. The only thing I question is why Denver traded up to #17 to get Moss. That seemed a little desperate to me, as I think he still would have been on the board at #21 for them. Everybody and their brother had the Broncos taking Moss. I wonder if they just let the scouting dept have the winter off and picked using a draft magazine?
skylive5
Washington: Got the guy they wanted and who should make an immediate impact. I would have preferred Okoye but am happy with a future defensive stud. The rest of the day off to sightsee was an added bonus to draft day. ebartender
Eagles: Well shocked wasn't the word when they took Kolb. I still don't understand it. The rest of the day was solid IMO. They added DL depth and were able to pick up a good OLB prospect and a big back who will compliment Westbrook nicely. I hope they grab a SS, CB, and SPT help today. Savage Beatings
Minnesota: Adrian Peterson... well, if he gets past all of the injury talk, then he's probably the most talented RB the Vikings have ever drafted. As a fan, I really couldn't be any more excited about this pick! Then Sidney Rice... well, it's one step in the right direction of helping out our lame Corps of WR's. Altogether, I LOVE our first day!!!

Furd
How do you think? I've put snippets of this in various threads. I think that the Lions are well on their way to another poor draft. Needs: With a terrible defense losing Dre Bly, defensive needs are many - CB (desperately), LB (MLB in particular), DL (pass rushing DE in particular). They're OK at safety. On offense, OL is the biggest need. Kitna was sacked 63 times last year and the rushing offense was nonexistent. WR is their strongest position. So the Lions draft WR,QB,DE,S. Calvin Johnson - Great talent. Not a great pick for the Lions. I hope that the Lions didn't turn down a decent trade for the pick. Is the offense going to be better? Sure. But how much better remains to be seen. You can win in this league without 1 stud WR, let alone 2. You can't win without defense. Drew Stanton - Terrible pick. With all of the Lions needs, they draft a project backup QB. Stanton has poor throwing mechanics, often makes bad decisions, and does not stand up to pressure - mental or physical. Apparently, he's a "Marinelli guy" or somesuch nonsense. Stanton is going to take a pounding should he play, because he likes to run and the Detroit OL sucks, and he ain't durable. Some DE from Hawaii(Ikaika Alama-Francis) - Don't know much about him. Kind of a tweener with not much football experience. He could work out, but he is not the pass rusher that the Lions need. Gerald Alexander (S-Boise State) - Apparently, this guy is a solid prospect and fits the cover-2. But safety is not among the Lions most pressing needs. GRADE: D+ The draft is about making your team better, not getting the best player.
Jolly Rodgers
The Bucs have many holes to fill so I am not upset they did not pay the ransom to Detroit for CJ. The Bucs had several needs going into the draft. We needed a DE, DT, S, WR, and another Gaurd. The first pick of Gaines Adams I love. He is going to be a monster and with Rice teaching him watch out NFC South. Our two second round picks were pretty good, we picked up Arron Sears (first round talent) to help solidify our young O-Line and Sabby Piscitelli to finally fill the hole of John Lynch. Our last pick was OLB Quincy Black who I hear is super fast and a great playmaker. I dont think he will start right away but he provides depth at the MLB position. All in all, I am happy they addressed the aging defense with first day picks. Edited April 29, 2007 by Jolly Rodgers
Dr. Love
Detroit Lions 1.2 - Calvin Johnson, WR Georgia Tech Grade: B- One may ask how I can give someone who may be the best receiver to come through the draft a B-. The answer is the same way I gave all-world talents Charles Rogers and Mike Williams low grades. I'm not suggesting that Johnson is anything less than the best WR to come out in ages. I am suggesting that the Lions already had two 1000 yard recievers that caught 180 balls between them. Even with Mike Martz's offense, there are only so many balls to be thrown around. The reality is that right now the offensive line and the whole of the defense (save for DT) are so bad that there aren't going to be enough offensive snaps to take advantage of the 3-headed WR monster that Matt Millen has been trying to build for the better part of a decade. After a good draft last year, Millen has regressed into thinking he's drafting a fantasy football team. 2.11 - Drew Stanton, QB Michigan State Grade: C I'm disappointed twofold in this pick, and neither reason really has much to do with Drew Stanton as a player. First, I've said for a while that if, where, and when a quarterback was picked in this draft would give Detroit fans a clue as to the ongoing development of Dan Orlovsky. Given that Stanton was taking when there are so many pressing needs on the team, it tells me that Martz thinks that Dan-O has no future in this league. The second way I'm disappointed is because the team has so many needs on defense and OL and this is the second luxury pick in a row made for a skill position player. I'm lukewarm on Stanton himself. His biggest weapon at MSU was his ability to run the ball, and I don't know how that will translate to the NFL. His accuracy seems to be inconsistent to me, and in a Martz offense that would seem to be more important than his strong arm. If Martz had a say in this, I'll defer to his judgement as to Stanton's talent. 2.58 - Ikaika Alama-Francis, DE Hawaii Grade: A- DE is a need position for the Lions. This kid looks to be a raw talent, but I trust that Marinelli can coach the kid up. He sounds like he's a great character guy and is willing to work hard. However, the raw nature of his talent makes it unlikely that he'll step right in as a starter and make an impact. Hopefully, his development will progress more quickly than I anticipate, as the Lions really need some help on D. 2.61 - Gerald Alexander, FS Boise State Grade: C- I don't know a lot about this guy, but his MO according to NFL.com seems to be similar to a lot of mid-round secondary players that Millen has taken recently: sloppy technique, adequate speed, poor play reading. Perhaps this kid can be taught to overcome those issues, but it seems unlikely that he'll contribute much, given the good play of Daniel Bullocks at FS last year. Overall First Day Grade: C- This is a situation where the whole is worse than the sum of its parts. The Lions came into this draft with gaping holes at CB, MLB, and OG and definite needs at DE and OT. They addressed exactly one of those positions in Day 1, and they did that with a project guy. This would have been an okay draft for a team that could afford to draft BPA, but the Lions needed to get starters at their need positions and didn't. CJ's all-universe talent is the only thing that kept this grade from being a D or lower.
Randall
Jimmy Williams moving to safety after all in Atlanta? The Falcons are hoping that Houston can start at right cornerback. He'll have to hold off free-agent signee Lewis Sanders and incumbent Jason Webster. Jimmy Williams, who lined up at right cornerback during the April minicamp, will move to free safety and compete with Chris Crocker for the starting job. What do Falcons fans think? Chief Dick
Chiefs: Draft a WR, but the offensive line won't be able to protect one of the two crappy quarterbacks we have, so no way Bowe will ever get the ball. BigTen
Stanton would rather throw than run. Yeah he ran a lot at State because of the play bad calling, break downs, an in ability of his WR to get open, or just plain desinged runs (something the MSU coaching staff loved to do). He was on a Sega!ty team with no real talent. I think he will not take as much of a pounding as you think because he will be able to avoid more hits because he can run. I think that they could have gotten him later on in the draft but I still beleive that he is solid.
The Irish Doggy
Bengals: Leon Hall CB: Solid pick for value in this draft, fills a need. We'll see how well he plays in the NFL. I'm not high on him personally. Irons RB: Well this says Chris Perry is done IMO. Following 3 injury-plagued years, its time anyway. With a little seasoning, this could be the new primary Bengals RB in a year or two. Rudi can't last forever. Brooks MLB: Supplemental pick last year - could have been a 1st/2nd round pick this year. Didn't really step up last year, but has said all the right things this offseason. Grade: B- Nothing really spectacular to note here IMO. Menudo
I was going to start a new thread on the Steelers draft, because I like the attention , but, I guess this thread will do. Overall, I came into this draft thinking that the Steelers had no desperate needs, so, there wasn't any real chance for me to get ultra-excited or ultra-disappointed with this draft. The Steelers do however have depth needs at OC/OG, DL, LB, CB. They also could use a solid RB to help take the workload off of Fast Willie and another WR to throw in the mix. Here is what they did: 1.15: Lawrence Timmons (OLB - Florida State) The Jets traded in front of the Steelers to take Darrelle Revis, worried that the Steelers were going to take him here. I believe the Steelers front office when they say that they weren't taking Revis anyway. However, it is being reported now that the Jets moving in front did hurt the Steelers. They had trade plans worked out with the Jags if Revis was there. They were going to move from 15 to 17, for the Jags 3rd rounder. The Jags would take Revis and the Steelers would take Timmons. The Steelers have hinted that Carriker & Anderson were there first two choices (of those that might make it to them), but, Timmons was next on their list of possibilities. Timmons makes sense for two reasons. First, the Steelers pass-rush, usually a strength, went downhill last year. Secondly, the linebacking corps is aging and thin with Porter's departure. Timmons is a one year starter with a lot of room to improve. He is a raw, athletic talent that flies around the field and love to hit. He will compete at ROLB with James Harrison, and will also get a look as the rush DE in the Dime, a position that Porter held. His size was a concern, but, many feel that he has a frame that can have weight added to it. With Harrison's size and injury concerns, bringing in someone to compete with him and someone who can add pass rushing skills was a good move. Though, my heart was telling me to go with Posluszny (PSU fan), I think that Timmons was the guy to take here. I didn't want to go CB, as many predicted the Steelers would go. 2.14: LaMarr Woodley (OLB - Michigan) After taking an OLB in the 1st round, I was a bit surprised, and initially disappointed when Woodley's name was called as the Steelers 2nd pick. I remembered Woodley as a strength on the tough Michigan defense last year, but, I wasn't sure about taking another OLB guy in this spot. However, as I continued to look around the internet for more information on Woodley, this became my favorite pick of Day 1. Woodley has a motor that just won't quit. He is a high character guy, who get immense praise heaped onto him by teammates and coaches alike. You can't argue with his numbers of 12 sacks and 16.5 tackles for a loss. A good point was brought up that Woodley had a lot of help around him in Michigan's defense, which might lead to inflated numbers. You can't argue that the guy is an intense football player that flies around the field and will really lay the "Wood" to opposing players. He is a phenomenal pass rusher and further adds to the Steelers wanting to get back to the days of leading the AFC in sacks. Woodley provides more depth at OLB, and will compete with both Timmons & Harrison at ROLB. He will eventually replace Haggans, and hopefully, if all goes well, eventually team with Timmons as an impressive OLB combo. I am convinced with this draft that Mike Tomlin isn't lying when he says that the team has no current plans to convert to a 4-3. My initial reaction was that I wanted Khalil or David Harris with this pick. Those two would have still been great selections, but, I'm now actually happy with their selection. Woodley appears to fit perfectly into the Steelers tradition of defense. 3.13 - Matt Spaeth (TE - Minnesota) ..and now for the head-scratcher of the draft. This was my reacton when this pick came up on the board. We went TE in the 3rd round ? This pick really didn't make a lot of sense. There were several guys that made a lot of sense just sitting there waiting to be gobbled up (Yanda, Alleman, Hunt, Bush). Make no mistake, Spaeth is a very good football player and a physical specimen. He was the Mackey award winner last year, but, with Heath Miller already on the roster, it simply didn't make sense. After reading the comments from the Steelers brain-trust (GM Colber, HC Tomlin, OC Arians), I do feel a bit better, but, still think it was a mistake pick. The Steelers brain-trust were giddy about this pick, insisting they got a steal with Spaeth. Rather than get angry over the pick, I had to remind myself that they have a new OC and HC, and things may be different, and another TE won't be wasted. Arians promises to really mix up his offense and use some 2 and 3 TE sets. Spaeth will definitely help our Goaline offense, as we will now have big receving threats on each side of the line. I'm still not happy with the selection, as I think if they wanted Spaeth, he would have been there later, but, Colbert has a solid track record, and I'll try to trust Arians when he insists that Spaeth won't be wasted. We shall see. Overall Grade = B- Nothing to be overly excited or overly upset about, as expected, but, I'll give the Steelers credit for getting there types of players, high motor, high character guys who were knows as leaders in college. Now, lets get some O-Line help in Day 2, and perhaps snag a WR, RB, and maybe even a Punter on day 2.
H8tank
Jaguars.... drafted two Def players with 1 and two after trading down, Reggie Nelson FS and Justin Durant ILB, both can be opening day players, most likely starters adding even more weapons to an already potent defense. They could have taken Quinn, but in hindsite I am glad they did not. I would much rather us draft a QB in the 4th. We drafted a project WR in the 3rd, Mike Walker, big 6'1, nice hands. I could easily see him being the 3rd WR, and mabe even #2 by the time they start thier playoff run. Day 2? We have 10 picks, time to pad that roster and add some depth, youth to the Defensive line and backfield. Overall so far, nice trades, good players, B+. edit, we have two picks in the 4th, I hope they go QB and TE. Rovers
Jets: Trading up to get their highest rated CB and the first one off the board was also a need pick. Revis is perfect for Mangini's system, a number one cover corner who can also come up and make tackles. CB was in fact easilly the biggest hole on the entire roster to pair with Dyson who played well last year. The inconsistant Barrett who reportedly played injured most of last year needed to be upgraded in any case. Harris, the ILB from Mich fell further than the Jets thought he would, and they traded up again for a combo need/BPA pick. If he does upgrade the run D, great... if not, this trade up cost the Jets the chance to get a guard, which imo was the second biggest team need. Because of that, my excitement about the Harris trade up is tempered. Barton has long been rumored to be a salary cap cut, and that now looks very likely with Harris relacing him on the inside in the Jets' 3-4. The Revis pick was great, Harris only so-so.... grade- B
