Does adding Harris help Vilma?

Recommended Posts

Word seems to be that David Harris was added for his size in the middle, something that seemed to hurt Vilma last year. Do you think this will help free up Vilma? I can't see it hurting, but at this point I don't see Vilma's value changing very much.

It potentially could help Vilma but I agree his Value doesn't change too much. At least not due to Harris' arrival. I see a small bump up in Vilma's production as a progression to the mean. That is, I expect his numbers to be somewhere in between 2005 and 2006's stats.

Harris will take over at the more productive ILB spot, and Vilma will remain in the less productive ILB slot. Vilma will hopefully adjust to the new 3-4 defense better this year, and perhaps make more big plays, but don't look for any significant bump in his numbers.

You think he'll put up worse numbers than last year? I was thinking he'd put up a bit better numbers this season. Almost want to say "waste of talent", but that would be the fantasy footballer in me speaking... I realize this is probably what's best for the Jets as an NFL team.

I see Vilma probably duplicating last yrs stats. Disappoinint for Vilma owners for sure. But this is what makes James Farrior and Donnie Edwards so great. They were productive regardless of scheme because they knew the system. Vilma will get there soon, and his numbers will increase as time goes on. But watching him late last yr, he isnt close yet.

No, what I mean by a bump is a slight bump UP, not down from 2006. Vilma had 192 points in one of my tackle heavy scoring leagues last year and was the 39th LB in scoring. That was only 21 points behind the #25 LB, which is around where I expect Vilma to land in 2007.

In the Jets/NE hybrid, it's the LILB that usually scores more FF points vs. the RILB. Farrior plays LILB, as does Bruschi... Foote plays the lesser productive RILB spot for the Steelers. So, mostly because of how this 3-4 hybrid D for the Jets works, even as a rookie, Harris may get more FF points than Vilma will. The Jets front 3 should be somewhat improved over the 2006 model, and that will help Vilma some too, as will another year in the system. Until the Jets' scheme changes, or Vilma gets moved to the left inside spot, his days as a stud FF LB are over for the foreseeable future.

I believe you, Rovers, but what's the deal with Barton? He seemed to be productive last year, but now everybody's acting like he's a non-factor.

Barton looks like a salary cap cut. So does CB Barrett. McCariens we all know is gone, but recent reports list LG Kendall as a possible cut too, and that one makes no sense at all. So, stay tuned.....

I have a hunch... and it's PURELY a hunch.... Barton won't have to move. He'll switch hemets, green and white for blue and red, and play his home games in the same stadium.

How does this affect Victor Hobson if I can steal/add to this thread?

Hobson will compete for the OLB spot against newly aquired Bowen, a DE pass rush specialist from Miami who will try to make the transition from DE to OLB the way Brian Thomas did last year. Too early to say how that will shake out. I've always felt Hobson was better suited to ILB in a 3-4....
