Bengals Draft & Offseason

Draft:

First, Character - no issues here, good guys drafted. Shouldn't be a point to discuss, but w/ Cincy.....Leon Hall seems like an outstanding individual. I believe he's gonna be very popular here.

1st - Leon Hall, CB Michigan. Revis was a surging CB predraft, but I still can't believe they got him. I don't care that he got burned a couple times late in season. There's a thousand times he didn't. Him and Joseph as the two CBs going forward make me very happy about the position for Cincy (haven't said that often thru the years)

2nd - Kenny Irons, RB Auburn. Didn't like the pick when I heard about it (Bengals need more defensive players). But I am predicting I'm gonna look back in two years and like the pick very much. It's a shame if Chris Perry misses part/most of this year, but this pick makes you think it's very possible. Haven't seen Irons, only heard that he was pretty good. Supposedly another "good guy" too.

3rd - (froms last years Supplemental Draft) Ahmad Brooks, LB Virginia. This is the part not realized post-draft. Much like Browns and Quinn, Bengals got a 1st round talent a year early. The dude is big, and fast. IF he pans out as planned, the Bengals defense will be better.

4th - Marvin White, S TCU. The guy can hit, fills a big need. From 4th round on, no one is a "sure thing" in the draft. You draft a guy w/ speed and some talent and hope for the best. This guy has both.

5th - Jeff Rowe, QB Nevada. I like the idea of drafting your permanent backup QB (and not playing a new FA game every year). I heard this guy could've been had a round or two later, but how would I know. The current coaches thinks this guy fits into Bengals style offense. If Palmer goes down, the Bengals aren't going anywhere, so you may as well not pay big FA money for backup.

6th - Matt Toeaina, DT Oregon. Hear he's big w/ a motor. If he's a decent rotation DT, its a good pick

7th - Dan Santucci, OG Notre Dame. A project/practice squad guy. Maybe a decent back up someday

7th - Chinedum Ndukwe, S Notre Dame. Supposed to be a big hitter, might stick if he can handle special teams. I'm betting he won't make squad since announcers won't be able to pronounce his name.

Offseason:

Very little. I'm glad they re-signed Geathers (DE w/ 10+ sacks last year). Not sure how I feel about re-signing Justin Smith (he never lived up to high 1st round pick, but he is extremely solid on all 3 downs.)

Mike Meyers, DT from Denver - a rotation guy only, but fair

Eddie Hartwell, LB from Atlanta - probably gonna sign today. If he is 3/4 of the Hartwell from Raven's days, this will be a major signing. If he resembles the Falcon days, I hope he's signed at veteran minimum.

Summary:

Hell, I don't know.

With Carson Palmer, the Bengals have a chance to make and compete in playoffs. A couple breaks (or a couple tackles) here and there, I like their chances this year every bit as much as the Ravens and Steelers.

He said last year he was benched because if his immaturity. He is trying to change that. He is working hard and doing his nest to become the starter. So far so good.

When he did start last year he was active and pretty good in coverge.

I'd be very curious to hear anything about Odell Thurman. The guy sure screwed the pooch, but on the other hand he can sure play the position.

Last I heard on Thurman.

Thurman pleads no contest to drunk-driving charge

February 21, 2007

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Bengals linebacker Odell Thurman pleaded no contest Wednesday to driving drunk last September and said he was undergoing treatment for alcohol abuse.

Hamilton County Municipal Court Judge John Burlew imposed a 90-day jail sentence but said Thurman did not have to start serving it yet. Another court hearing was set for June 5, at which the judge said he planned to reduce the sentence if Thurman, 23, continues treatment and has no other alcohol-related offenses.

He suspended Thurman's driver's license for a year and fined him $250 and court costs.

The plea is not an admission of guilt but means the defendant will not fight charges. Two stemming from the early morning Sept. 25 traffic stop were dropped.

After the arrest, the NFL suspended Thurman for the season. He had already been serving a four-game suspension from the league for missing an offseason drug test.

Thurman was a second-round draft pick out of Georgia in 2005 and started 15 games as a rookie. He led the team in tackles, tied for the lead in forced fumbles, and had five interceptions, the most by any rookie in the NFL. He can apply for reinstatement by the NFL before next season.

Thurman is among nine Bengals players arrested on various charges in less than a year, and coach Marvin Lewis has indicated he is no longer in the team's plans.

Don't be surprised if Thurman is there for pre-season.He gets to apply for reinstatement in July, and apparently has followed all the guidelines set.

Well yeah, but he hasn't practiced with the team in a year. I'm hoping for the best, but we'll see.

Well, June 5 is a big day then. A judge will determine how serious he's been about getting straightened out - not a NFL official or a coach.

Man, if Lewis doesn't want Thurman playing for him any longer, I can think of a few teams that would be willing to take a risk on him if he's stayed in shape - what else does he have to do and he's got to know that he's at the point in very very lucrative career where one action could flush it all down the toilet right now.

At least I hope he realizes that... :D

I think the eight-game suspension of Henry and the new scrutiny of the league takes a little pressure off Marvin having to make an "example" of Odell. I think one could reasonably read two things from the Bengals draft: 1. Chris Perry is toast; 2. They plan on giving Odell one last shot.

I realize I'm just mostly hoping the latter is true, though.

I'm wondering how far Henry may fall in drafts. Palmer loves throwing to him in the red zone, and assuming the Bengals are in the hunt, he'd be nice to stash away for the playoff run. I don't think 6-8 TDs in 8 games is an unreasonable projection for Henry.

Spring homerism is a dangerous thing.
