My first draft of the year

Just finished a 22 man roster, 12 team draft for a magazine which is traditionally my first draft of the year. It's always tough too because I am not even mid-way through all the analysis and writeups for the rankings but then again, most everyone else is not any more prepared either.

I will post the first several rounds when I get it probably today or tomorrow.

This is a "best ball" league which means you get the top scores from your roster to go to a lineup of QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, TE, PK and DEF. There are no reception points.

I drafted sixth which meant I mostly missed starting any runs so while my team may lack the star power I would want in a normal league, my aim in this is to get a decent set of QB and RB since they score much more. For TE's. I like to get two decent ones so one of them will have something each week though they score less than any position. For WR, I like to get a mixture of solid players and then some "swing for the fence" kind of guys. Of my 7 WRs, I only need the top 3 scores each week so inconsistency of a player is much less important (unless they all time it perfect with each other). WRs score okay but nothing like QB and RB.

My first 2007 roster:

QB Kitna, Jon

QB Romo, Tony

QB Grossman, Rex

RB Johnson, Rudi

RB Benson, Cedric

RB Norwood, Jerious

RB Irons, Kenny

RB Hunt, Tony

WR Fitzgerald, Larry

WR Chambers, Chris

WR Johnson, Calvin

WR Kennison, Eddie

WR Williams, Mike

WR Gonzalez, Anthony

WR Engram, Bobby

TE Smith, L.J.

TE Scheffler, Tony

PK Josh Scobee

PK John Kasay

DEF BAL

DEF BUF

DEF NYG

Rod Smith was not drafted in 22 rounds which was a surprise. You could really tell which teams were really going by just last year's results. People really liked rookie WR this year. Yes, I took Calvin Johnson and Anthony Gonzalez, but DET and IND passing games are obviously good and both have a shot at a few decent games this year. In a real league, I would typically shy away from rookie WRs all together.

The only pick that I really waivered on was my #1 when I took Rudi Johnson. I wanted to get a RB who would be solid even if it meant he would not be spectacular. I passed on Addai, Parker and others since I am still researching and forecasting them.

First RBs drafted:

1. LT

2. Jackson

3. L Johnson

4. Alexander

5. Gore

I'll post some of the results when I get them.

It is 2007!

THe Rudi pick I'm a bit surprised, but understand with it being so early and projections not done.

You have a "muddle" team - no one that's a full out stud (save Fitz and Bal Def) at their position, but you may muddle your way to a playoff berth. With the QB scoring being so important, definitely need CJ to be as good as advertised to get Kitna up there. Curious - what number QB drafted was Kitna?

I think I took him as the 5th or 6th QB? I watched Palmer and Brees go right before me too...

There is no playoffs with this either. 16 weeks, play everyone every week so you can go 11-0 or 0-11 in a week. With that, you want to obviously have a better than average total score every week.

Agreed on the stud thing but drafting 6th and knowing RBs would fly I went RB-RB and was happy enough to reach Fitzgerald with my 3rd.

Most Bears fans are still fence sitting about our Cedric.

I'm mildly suprised DMD didn't handcuff CHI's Adrian Peterson to Benson, barring roster requirement limitations, or someone else stealing him.

DMD has had the hots for Benson since he was drafted. Most Bears fans are still fence sitting about our Cedric.

Not so really, I picked him at the 2.07 and debated between he and Thomas Jones there. I just don't buy that Peterson is going to have that much of a role. I am more convinced that Thomas will have to share in NYJ. Again - I am still in the analysis and research phase so all this could change.

At this point, I am more intersested in seeing if Garrett Wolfe becomes a third down back in CHI.

Yeah, just not sure about that one. I considered Wolfe sort of late but opted to make Tony Hunt my final RB. Someone drafted Peterson higher than I would have even if I wanted him. Realize too I took RBs in the 1st, 2nd and 4th rounds, so I did not go back to them until pretty late.

Is there anybody else who will share the load with him? I took both TJ and Bensons numbers last year and came up with 453 carries / 1857 yards and 12 TD's. If you take 75% of those numbers, a good projection would be 339 carries and 1389 yards and 9 TD's. Good enough for top ten? I would think so. He could even do better than that now that he knows he is the man...

I really don't know but the Bears simply have to play Benson as their clear #1 given the money they spent on him. That said, Peterson is no slouch and I see him spelling Benson for maybe 3-5 a game. Wolfe is the wild card here.

No offense DMD, but that draft looks terrible.

I would be going :D if that was my team going into 2007.

Given who was available when the selections were made, which was would you have gone for the best ball format?

To me you have a fine team.

Your WR's scare me more than anything. you need for either Chambers or CJ to come through strong for you .

I only need three of the seven to come up with a decent score each week. It is not a high scoring position anyway.

With that type of draft you came out with 3 solid QB's...that should do well for you from week to week.

I almost would of went and got Griese too as a "just in case" for Grossman.

I think that Benson is the key to your team here, DMD. If he performs as others feel he should -- and potentially becomes a top-10-back -- then you'd have 20% of the top-10 at a high scoring position. Hope that one of your other RB's pans out (Norwood, perhaps?) and becomes a starter, because you are awfully thin at that position.

It's be interesting to see how the season plays out. Are trades permitted?

This will be the 2nd year in a row, where picking in the middle slots will leave you with an uneasy feeling when you are walking out of your draft. I selected 8th last year, and I think it was the first time in 15 years, that I wasn't totally please with my squad. If you can choose your seat, choose it early or choose it late.

Many Bears fans don't question Benson's abilities or talent, but his work ethic and heart for the game have taken a lot of hits, especially in the wake of his 1 Carry and I'm Hurt Appearance in the f'ing Super Bowl. I am ultimately optimistic that he will play and play hard, but let's be realistic here: he hasn't shown too much of that.

AP is a solid backup, and although undersized, Angelo took a more than a flyer on Garrett Wolfe in the 3rd round of draft, who he has likened to Warrick Dunn whom he also drafted. Hyperbole? Prolly, but if Benson gets nicked -again- it's down to AP+GW. A poor man's thunderandlightning (all small caps) if ever there was one.

there are no trades or even roster moves. You have to let the whole roster ride the whole season. It is a "no maintenance way to play which is how a lot of those magazine leagues are ran.

If that's the case the only thing that would worry me is your QBs... 2 might not be starting after midseason.

Grossman is bad enough to play himself out of starting spot. Say if CHI is .500 at midseason which isn't far fetched given their schedule before the bye (@SD, KC, DAL, @PHI and they might drop one of the division games) and how the defending NFC champ has fared lately. He started hot last year but if he starts how he ended I can see Griese or maybe even Orton given a shot. The D/ST is good enough to carry any QB that doesn't give games away.

Kitna is on a bad enough team to end up giving way to Orlovsky or Stanton by midseason if they've only won 2-3 games.

I do like your team though... especially at DST and RB.

IMO only 1 thing keeps either of those guys from starting 16 games...and that is injury.

I did notice earlier DMD that you use all your players. those teams with 2 QB's would seem to be starting from behind right from get go.

Good team. My first thought your RB depth would worry me but after looking at the early rounds of the whole draft, tho I might've picked someone else, I can see that pick. You did well to get Fitz where you did also...
