Best wines for about $10 or less

Actually wine is a very personal thing. Just because there is a $50 price tag on the bottle doesn't make it a great wine. Nor does it mean that it isn't great to wine people but completely bleecchh to the masses.

That being said, what types of wine do you like? I've had the good fortune to taste all of Bully Hill's offerings and to actually meet Walter S. Taylor. There are an aweful lot of wines from that vineyard, not all of which are very good. But he has a very specific agenda not all of which is about making good wine (although it is about making good NEW YORK wine).

So help us out here a little. I can offer up a lot of wines under $10 but that doesn't mean you'd want to drink them.

Anyone for a little Ripple or Thunderbird? How about some MadDog 20/20?

Not much of a Chardonney fan, but otherwise I like most any "decent" wine, ie pretty wide open. I'm also kind of "seasonal" ie I lean more to white wines in the summer, reds in the winter, but generally I really don't have strong pref's to any one type and bounce around a lot.

Spare me the Boones Farm jokes. Only a pompous loser bent on impressing others with their alleged knowledge thinks you have to spend a lot of money to buy good, even great wines. So....whacha got?

For starters, you do need to spend more than $10 for great wines. Plain and simple. Good wines? There's a mountain of them for less that $10.

For my money, you can't beat Argentina for over delivering for the money. Malbec, Cabernet, Merlot, Sauv Blanc, Chardonnay. They do good versions of all of them and range from $5-$6 for good enough to $10-$15 for pretty freaking tasty.

As twiley said, there's a pinned thread above.

Then again, what do I know, I'm just a pompous loser.

Your odds are better but no, you don't "need" to.

Yep

Cool will check, thx

Naturally I saw that after I made this thread :D

Sorry to hear it. Don't worry though, there are a ton of them in the wine snobbery dept, you'll blend right in.

I suppose if your definition of "great" is actually "really good", then have at it. If your definition of "great" is the fact that some dude like Rbt Parker gave it a 93 or so, then have at it.

However, if your definition of "great" follows the standard accepted notion that to be "great" you can't be common and must possess some degree of singularity, distinction, and inspiration then, no you are wrong.

This is not your common sports website smack talking "you are wrong". This is, guy who tastes wine for a living and understands that there are plenty of tasty wines that don't cost much money and is not actually a wine "snob" telling a guy who likely does not taste wine for a living or he wouldn't be trolling the Huddle for wine recs "you are wrong".

At any rate, check out Argentina, there's some great juice to be had.

+ 1 From another snob who used to taste, sell, consult, distribute and import wien... There are some good wiens to very good wiens that sell for around $10 but as Det said there are no great wiens for $10, if you are looking at a bottle of dessert wien a "very good" wien can be found around $10-15... An Oremus Tokaji late harvest 2002 is a wien that I would recommend, if you can find it! I think I bought it for $9.99 after my case discount. A more reasonable price for "very good" wiens would be below $20 where you can find many wiens that score in the 90-94 point range used by Wien Speculator and RP.

IMHO... it's not a great idea to ask a group for advice and criticize that group in the same breath; unless you are int he Tailgate! :D

Edited to add another good value wien: 2003 Biurko Rioja Graciano, I had this the other night and The WA rated it 89 points. It can be found HERE for $9.99. Spain is another great place to find some value wiens!

It's just a german way of spelling wine, similar to whiskey and whisky.

To each is their own.

I didn't criticize "this group" (whatever that means) - I criticized pompous loser wine snobs. If you align yourself in that category, that's your thing, not mien.

:D

PS what I consider "great wine" is a "wine that tastes great." A wine is IMO not great because Johnny Cheeseball gave it some hot wine rating. I'm not a sheeple (or whatever the current trendy word for that is). And no I don't profess to be a world-class expert, but neither am I a total wine ignoramus either. I'm just a guy who has had his share of wines of all types, prices, etc that loves wine but hates the unbelievable amount of pretentious BS that often accompanies it. And that also is not aimed at you or anyone here; it's a very general observation. To each their own...

Well thanks for the suggestions, but for now I'm off to crack another box of Franzia with a Budweiser chaser. :D
