Yukon Cornelius
QB Mustain transfers from Arkansas to USC May 21, 2007 LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Quarterback Mitch Mustain, who went 8-0 as a freshman starter last season for Arkansas, has transferred to Southern California. Mustain, who will have three years of eligibility remaining after sitting out next season, is enrolled at USC for summer school and attending classes, sports information director Tim Tessalone confirmed Monday. ADVERTISEMENT The 6-foot-3, 205-pound Mustain was a prized recruit after completing over 70 percent of his passes in 2005 for the undefeated state championship team at Springdale, Ark. He enrolled at Arkansas along with three of his high school teammates. In addition, Springdale coach Gus Malzahn was hired as the Razorbacks' offensive coordinator. After Arkansas lost to USC 50-14 to begin last season, Mustain was made the starter. The Razorbacks won their next eight games with an offense that revolved around tailback Darren McFadden, the Heisman Trophy runner-up. Casey Dick took over as the starting quarterback in the season's 10th game. Mustain and Dick both played in the Razorbacks' 17-14 loss to Wisconsin in the Capital One Bowl. Arkansas, the SEC West champion, finished the season 10-4 and ranked 15th in the nation. Malzahn left afterward to join the coaching staff at Tulsa, and Mustain asked for and received his release to transfer. Mustain completed 69 of 132 passes for 894 yards and 10 touchdowns with nine interceptions for the Razorbacks. Wide receiver Damian Williams, also from Springdale, transferred from Arkansas to USC as well. Williams will also have three years of eligibility remaining after sitting out next season. Mustain is expected to compete for the starting quarterback position in 2008 with Mark Sanchez, who completed 3-of-7 passes for 63 yards for USC as a freshman last fall. John David Booty, who passed for 3,347 yards and 29 touchdowns for the Trojans last season, will be a senior next year.
Sgt. Ryan
Mustain will rot on the bench for SC. Sanchez may end up better than Leinart, and I dont see Mustain unseating him
GWPFFL BrianW
I'm kinda surprised. He's basically going to a role where he'll have to completely wow the coaching staff to get any playing time at all. Really don't see it happening. Maybe he wants to rot on the pine. Maybe Mitch just don't have the sack anymore, and just wants to take the scholarship to ride the pine and land a national title out of the deal. abishagenaden
Well, we do need some QB depth after Booty is done this season.

Sleeping King
Mustain does not need to beat out Sanchez. Sanchez will start in 08 as a junior. If he plays as well as everyone thinks he can he will turn pro. Mustain sits out this year but he will have 3 years of eligibility when he returns in 08. So he starts as a junior in 09. And you do not even need to start at USC to be drafted. See Matt Cassel. Edited June 4, 2007 by Sleeping King
polksalet
Mustain has better physical tools than any USC qb I have seen, including Palmer. The kid has a stronger arm than most nfl qb.s and is decently mobile in the pocket. That being said he could learn lessons in judgment from Jake Plummer. Think Akili Smith with Favre's circa 1995 arm.
Muggsy
Mustain HAD to transfer to a school that runs more of a pro-style offense if he has any ambitions of being a pro prospect. He played in 13 games last year and threw only 132 passes, not exactly the kind of program to end up on the NFL radar. Even if Sanchez sticks around for his senior year, Mustain will have had 4 years of practicing and/or playing in a pro offense by the time he graduates, so his draft prospects will be much better than staying at Arkansas' run first, second, and probably third style offense. polksalet
This is a bit of a stretch, IMHO. So of the 90 or so qb's in the league, you don't think he would rate in the top 45 for pure power?
Dutch Oven
So of the 90 or so qb's in the league, you don't think he would rate in the top 45 for pure power? That's something that is hard to gauge right now, especially wiht his limited deep throws last year. Having said that, I have a hard time saying that Mustain has better physical tools than Palmer or Leinart. We'll see what happens if he gets a shot. Coffeeman
Looking at USC's almost embarassing depth in the backfield (incl WRs), I dare say the Trojans are better equipped to handle any injuries/performance issues better than most NFL squads. It may take awhile to see who emerges from all those young guys, and there will be some bruised egos for Pete to soothe, but its a nice 'problem' to have. Long live St. Pete.....
