Saints D updates

Recommended Posts

I posted a lengthy thread in the NFL forum with multiple IDP reports from camp. If you want to read the whole thing head over there. The short of it is Roman Harper (again) looking very good in camp. No lingering problems being noticed. Brian Simmons has been limited with a knee injury, but should be a full go by next weekend. CB Usama Young has been very impressive so far, either him of Jason David should be starting opposite McKenzie this season. My guess is it'll be David due to experience. Charles Grant looking lean & quick, showing no signs of sitting on his fat contract...also stories of Will Smith being unhappy with his contract are bogus. Saints likely will get him a new deal after this season. Mike McKenzie looks "fired up" & ready to go. Kaesviharn has looked impressive but a little gimpy...has a thigh quad contusion and working on a limited basis. It's been also noted before that he will likely start at FS opposite Harper. Last year's starter, Josh Bullocks "has his work cut out for him. Jason David.....one tough son of a *****......very aggressive.....attacks the wide out.....plays the ball....cuts on a dime.....this was a good pickup by the front office, VERY GOOD."

NOTES FROM THE PRACTICE FIELD

- Saints fans were the loudest during one-on-one passing drills where a wide receiver would be matched up against a defensive back. Corner Mike McKenzie and receiver Marques Colston appear to be having a nice competitive game going on. McKenzie in the drill and afterwards in team drills, made catching the ball a living hell for Colston, batting down balls and breaking up passes after it touched Colston’s hands.

- The two young cornerbacks, Usama Young and David Jones, again were impressive. Young is rising up the corner depth chart at least for NFL Analyst Mike Detillier, “I think by the time it’s all said and done he’ll be the team’s number three cornerback.” Jones made numerous plays in batting down balls and always seems to be right on the receivers when they’re making cuts.

- Cornerback Joe Porter showed why he’s out on the practice field but also why he may not be long term for the Saints. Porter has had trouble covering but due to his blazing speed he’s been able to close and make a play. Porter was the100 and 200 meter Big East Sprint Champion at Rutgers. Receiver Jamal Jones beat Porter on a stop and go, the move causing fans to “OOOO” but Porter made up about ten yards and by the time the ball reached Jones, Porter closed and broke up the pass.
