Marco Rivera released

Recommended Posts

As anticipated, the Cowboys released the 35-year-old guard Thursday after he spent the off-season rehabbing a second surgery in two years to repair the same herniated disk in his lower back.

Rivera has been present at the handful of OTA practice sessions open to the media here at Valley Ranch, but has spent his time working with team trainers on the sideline and interacting with coaches and teammates. The Cowboys will incur no further financial liability for Rivera since he failed to pass his exit physical at the end of last season and had yet to be cleared to practice this year.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said earlier Thursday he planned to make a decision on Rivera's status by the end of the week when asked if the team would likely release the veteran starter.

"Yes, I think that's a possibility," Jones said, then reemphasizing "possibility."

Less than three hours later possibility became real, the Cowboys officially cutting ties with the 11-year veteran who was set to earn a $2 million base salary in 2007 with three years left on his contract.

Now the Packers can re-sign him and please all the fans who hate Ted Thompson.

Most don't hate him, they just wanted to see him do more in free agency. He's moving slowly and most wanted more of a sense of urgency. He seems to do well in the draft, getting value where many don't see it. Many fans are coming around and think he had a good draft.
