Huzz
Link Just curious to know how the league knows that a practice is too intense or physically demanding on the players. Does a player or his agent on the team need to call into the union’s office and complain? Does the league have player’s reps at every practice to watch and report? Then what do they base their criteria off of to make a judgment call that a practice is too intense and penalties should or would be warranted? I understand players like Corey Stringer and others have made these things watched more closely. Come on the Raiders need some work, they have a new coach and to me it seems shameful to penalize them even more by cutting off a weeks worth of work. Even if the work is just weights I would assume additional film or whatever was probably also missed. Thoughts on this? irish
Thoughts....Sure. The Raiders are a terrible team/organization and whoever's complaining should just shut their traps and play ball. Seriously I can't believe with all the money these cry babies make, that they'd be complaining about practice being to hard/intense. They could use a little intensity of the team. I mean, okay their defense was pretty solid but what does it really matter if you can barely win games. They should make the whole team practice in pads from the beginning of practices through the preseason. The Oakland Masterbaiters should zip it up and work toward being more competitive no matter what it takes.
DMD
Any player represented by the union (which I believe is literally every one but just a couple) can report violations of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Uh... yeah that would definitely be correct. I would assume it's just like any other union with it's members having the power to grieve an action. Outshined
I think it is physical contact. I am with the players union on this. You have to draw the line somewhere. I don't think they need to be hitting this early. 5 more weeks and the pads will go on and stay on for 6 months. http://www.insidebayarea.com/raiders/ci_6157771 Edited June 18, 2007 by Outshined
satelliteoflovegm
Just another case of the workers being pushed hard because of the owners lack of planning. Each team has shop stewards or player reps in this case, they would be in charge of complaining to the union who would then investigate, talk to ownership, and decide whether to grieve it or not. The Raiders may have been unaware of the violation and when they heard about it voluntarily cancelled the planned workouts.

If the practice is taking place in dangerous conditions (a la the Stringer scenario), I would understand...but "too intense?" Please...here's a tip fellas: football IS an intense game. You want less intensity, go run a bed and breakfast.

xMRogers
According to Golic this morn, the Raiders must be dumber than dirt - way that usually works is someone snitches to NFLPA, who goes to league, who tells the Raiders - "we're coming next Tues to review cause we had a complaint".... said it's been the same for 30 years, and what happens is the "next Tues" practice is different than every other one

Ahhh, so the players are WORKERS who have a right to Rosie O'Donnell out of preparation that might elevate them from their sad-sack status? Wow. What would it be like if players were ATHLETES who had an unquestioned devotion to doing whatever it takes in terms of personal preparation to ensure team success? Good thing the union contract is there to protect them from the oppression of extra practice if they suck.

Clubfoothead
I thought the snitch was either AtomicCEO or Billay, but I am not sure which... The Raiders would probably have a better record next year if every player on the team made the exact same amount. satelliteoflovegm
Glad we agree That extra physical practice would have put them over the hump? The rules are there for a reason and they apply to every team equally. Some gung ho toddler of a coach isn't going to wiave his magic wand and get the Raiders in the playoffs. Riffraff
My first thought was Warren Sapp. He was with Tampa Bay when they got tagged with a similar violation years ago. I'm probably wrong though. Faulty memory and such.
