I thought Brandon Jacops would be one of the hottest fantasy players this season with Tiki gone...sort of like addai...In the mock drafts he is a late 3rd to early 4th rounder and I have no idea why....How is he a 4th round pick and the 19th best RB in the rankings....Help me out.

1. Giants' suspect OL.

2. Droughns stealing carries

3. Eli's turnovers resulting in them playing catchup a lot

Those are valid concerns. Those and that he hasn't had any experience as a #1 RB makes him a riskier selection.

That said, it also doesn't mean he won't outperform his draft position. The guy is a load, but he's also very quick on his feet & catches pretty well out of the backfield.

I actually think that the addition of Droughns helps Jacops this fantasy season. Droughns is a guy that will give Brandon some rest when he needs it because of the fact that he is such a hard and punishing RB resulting into taking some pressure off him to be the number 1 guy. He is not a backup that will steal those precious goal line carries and a guy that when you are watching your stud fantasy back make you want to puke because your guy is not in the game. the giants know that Jacops is more than capable of handling goal line carries i think besides LT and LJ, Jacops is the best goal line rb the league has right now. I think jacops is a lock for at least 15 td's this season.

Pssst - it's Jacobs, not Jacops. Just thought you ought to know. Now you want to talk about TJ Housyourmama?

Oddly enough, I think Tiki had a better nose for the endzone than Jacobs. You may find that Droughns gets those goalline carries and that BJ will have to score from 5+ yards out.

Last year Tiki had 5 rushing TD's 11, 16, 50, and 55 yards.

Brandon Jacobs had 9 rushing TD's: Four 1 yard runs, 2 yards, 3 yards, 4 yards, 8 yards, and 10 yards.

I don't think I'm going to worry about Droughns taking away goal line carries. :D

Agreed. Jacobs is incredibly successful in short yardage situations. Don't make me pull out the splits...

I don't think there's any question as to who will get the goal line carries. Why would anyone think it would be Droughns? With the success Jacobs has had, why would they consider anyone else. If nothing else, Jacobs has shown time after time he gets the couple yards you need at the goal line. As far as a #1 back, I'm in his corner and hope he does well but he does have something to prove in that dept.

Jacobs is in no way shape or form, ready to be a full time running back in the NFL. He runs upright and would get his legs handed to him on a platter once teams got to him week in and week out. He is not a Bettis, or Campbell. He is tall, huge and fast but that is a lot of weight on those knees and defenders are not going to hit him high just out of fear. So 25 to 30 carries a game means the same amount of hits to the knees and legs because he doesn't run low. I just don't see him an every down back. Goal line absolutely but how much goal line action will he see with Eli at the helm. Hard to see a lineman huffing a puffing for 30 yards then, lining up to do it again. He also has been known to put the ball on the ground a few times. If that continues at all his carries at the goal line will surely go down. Game planning for Jacobs will be much easier then planning for Tiki, I can tell you that for sure. Tiki made a lot of people miss and in very tight spaces. I just don't see Jacobs being able to do that one on one in the hole. He may run over a guy or two for 5 or 6 but not for 50 like Tiki, and not without absorbing some punishment.

What exactly did Droughns do in Cleveland to make people think he is going to steal the rock from Jacobs?

It's not necessarily a faith in Droughns (although he does have 2 1,000 yard seasons in the last 3 years--one in Cle), but a lack of faith in Jacobs' ability to be a full-time RB...

You can't dismiss the fact that there were quite a few better quality RBs available in free agency than Droughns that the Giants didn't pursue, nor did they draft a RB to take a ton a carries in the near future. I'm not sure how the Giants organiztion appears to have anything but faith in Jacob's ability to be a full-time RB. For the time being that weighs fairly heavily.

Is this the same group that had great faith in Eli? :D

I was speaking from the perspective of a fantasy owner, not the Giants brass...

Droughns runs hard. He has the ability to get north and south in a hurry, which is the biggest thing Jacobs has yet to show. More importantly, coaches love it. If Jacobs isn't very productive at the beginning of the season, Droughns has the type of running style that will draw media and fan pressure onto the coaching staff. Jacobs still looks too much like a DE with the wrong number on.

BTW, my prediction for Jacobs much earlier in the year. I'll stand by it:

Jacobs will get plenty of work. The Giants have playoff aspirations and they are looking for depth at RB right now. Tiki is a completely different animal than Tiki (obviously), but I think that works in the Giants' favor. It becomes a pick-your-poison type of decision for D coordinators. Do you play light to stop the passing game, especially with a TE like Shockey on the field, and allow a huge load like Jacobs to play pinball with your lighter D players, or do you play strength & mass to stop Jacobs & take your chances with the passing O? Not too many Ds are capable of doing both simultaneously.

In any case, Jacobs is certainly capable of being the featured RB. He averaged 4.4 ypc last year - and a relatively large percentage of his carries were in short yardage/goalline situations. That's pretty solid numbers. When he carried the ball outside the red zone, he averaged 5.22 ypc and when he carried the ball on 1st or 2nd down he averaged 4.69 ypc. Then you add that in 27 carries in the red zone he converted 11 1st downs and 9 TDs, and his conversion rate in the red zone is 74%. That means in evry 4 carries down there, he either scored or kept a drive going on 3 of those carries. That's an outrageous conversion percentage.

Then you add a run/catch ratio of 8.73 and his ypr average of 13.5 and you have a very good lead RB on your hands.

Based upon the numbers above, here's what I'm projecting for Jacobs in 2007:

282 carries for 1376 yds rushing

14 rushing TDs

32 catches for 368 yds

2 receiving TDs

-----------------------------

314 total touches for 1764 total yds & 16 TDs.

That workload is easily obtainable for him - that's 17+ carries per game & 2 catches per game.

Those numbers would make Jacobs a top 5 FF RB and wouls still leave 140+ rushes & 37+ receptions for another RB on the roster.

I can't remember the last time I've seen a guy with such a range in predictions. Some see him as a top 15 type back, while others don't see him being the starter all season. It will be interesting to see what happens.
