Bronco Billy
I picked up nfl.com's and ESPN's FF rags this past weekend. Figured that I'd throw some thoughts out there regarding same: nfl.com's rag is awful. It is FF for beginners, and quite frankly the writers do not comprehend the difference between the real NFL and playing FF. A good example of this is Schefter (whom I admit a strong bias against) putting Manning as the 2nd most valuable FF player in the league. Their mock draft is a joke, and you could seriously say that you'd want to play in their league and most likely kick their asses. Their advice on drafting is FF at its most basic level and would get your teeth kicked in in most leagues where guys have played for at least 3 years. It also has the typical pandering stories - No IDPs either. Team write ups are pretty banal. It's only real value is in the individual player writeups, which are pretty decent scouting reports, but take them with a grain of salt as the writers are the kings of the front runners. ESPN's rag is pretty solid. Nice angles on guys who aren't first through third rounders - you know, the guys who will help owners win their leagues. The mock draft is solid - one you'd expect to see here, with some great side commentary on each round's best and worst picks as well as a rebuttal on the worst picks. Some nice locker room humor thrown in to boot. The player evaluations at each position on offense are deep and well done, and it includes IDPs. Team write ups aren't particularly good, but they do play to stats geeks. Some outstanding evaluation of O splits based on situation and matchups against individual D players that may really help on week-to-week decisions. As far as nfl.com's rag, there isn't anything in there that you couldn't learn here and some of the crap is actually very poorly thought out or written. This would be the definitive magazine that you'd love to see your league mates walk into your draft carrying. They should get out of the business, because they really embarrass themselves. ESPN's effort is worth the money, and while they are painfully off on some of the IDP values, they do a pretty darn good job overall. Recommended for serious pre-August bathroom evaluation. The Wolf
I picked up ESPN's mag at the airport, waiting to catch a flight home. Without having looked at another magazine, I have no basis for comparison. However, they do a nice job with some (at least to me) little-known stats from Scientific Football 2007. When you're on the can as much as I am, ya gotta gave good reading material. This mag fits the bill. Now I need a solid college football mag and I am all set...! MikesVikes
I wouldn't expect anything more from the NFL magazine. I got the Fanball magazine because I like their sense of humor more than anything. The magazine lacks the depth that you'd like from a magazine and I couldn't finish reading the team analysis' because it had one sentence for each position on the team followed by 2 paragraphs of funny analogies. I guess that you get what you ask for.
