Porter to receive punishment?

PORTER PUNISHMENT COMING

Tuesday's news regarding the suspensions of Bucs cornerback Torrie Cox and Raiders running back Dominic Rhodes for violations of the substance-abuse policy reminded us that Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter is on deck for a punishment of some type under the Personal Conduct Policy for his guilty plea to battery on Bengals left tackle Levi Jones.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello, whose dedication to his job had him responding to our e-mails after 10:00 p.m. EDT the night before a national holiday (hey, folks, we gotta keep up good relations with the people at Park Avenue), says that a consultation between Porter and the league office has occurred regarding the matter, but that Porter did not meet with Commissioner Roger Goodell.

The next step, then, will be the issuance of a fine or a suspension. Last year, a guilty plea for disorderly conduct arising from the 2005 sex boat escapade resulted in the loss of a game check for Vikings left tackle Bryant McKinnie and Vikings cornerback Fred Smoot. In this new climate of intolerance regarding off-field conduct, we think that a guilty plea for battery on a fellow NFL player could trigger a one-game suspension.

With that said, we suspect that the Fins are lobbying the league office aggressively to have Porter available for the September 9 regular-season opener at Washington. The team's best argument in this regard? They're giving up a home game this year to facilitate the league's desire to play games in other countries.

The new GM is strict, would hate to see Porter suspended for something as stupid as this.

Porter himself should have thought about that before he and his band of thugs jumped Levi Jones.

I think Porter is worse than the other two (Rhodes & Cox) and should get atleast 4 games. The NFL has been trying desperatly to shed their thug image and Porter did nothing to help that. Also, assult and battery is worse than substance abuse, in my book atleast.

I think we all as men need a reminder every now and then about doing things as stupid as talking smack in the face of guys.Especially ones who hurt people for a living...I'm sure most of us huddlers have been in a fight at some point in our life, and most of us are ordinary joes...We expect these guys to beat the crap out of each other on the field, then excpect them to see each other on the street and ask "Hey,how's your mom doing?"............Think of most of the shhh talking that we as "fantasy" owners do about players, then think about how many of us would talk the same trash in front of the same player(s) with two of his friends(not a band of thugs) standing next to him...Yes,unfortunately sometimes grown men loose their temper, and sometimes we fight too.I'm not trying to justify it,but in the age of shottings, stabbings, and bombings, let's look at it for what it was...a freakin fight......If you're grown enough to talk smack, you're grown enough to get smacked-up!

Joey has needed smacked up for several years now. His antics were never impressive to me as a Steeler fan. Sure, talk trash, play your game, but be a professional and leave it on the field. Or fight it out on the field like he did with William Green a few years back. Even that was over the top and unnecessary. Enjoy your time away, Joey. We will not miss you.

I've stated for years how much I disliked Porter and thought he didn't fit in with the Steelers. I always appreciated his abilities on the field, and the fact that his teammates liked him, but, I like the guys that let their play on the field do their talking......

I have to admit, I sure enjoyed having him against the Colts in the playoffs in 2005. Other than that one incredible game, his time in the Burgh is an afterthought.
