Best in his sport

I'd have to go with Jerry Rice as well. He is the undisputed best WR the league has ever had. At all the other positions, you can argue for one player over another, but not at WR.

NBA - Wilt or possibly MJ

NHL, MLB, NHRA, NASCAR, PBR, etc.. who cares.

Gentlemen, its spelled Gretzky. And he is the best player of all time in his respective sport. I dont think there is a larger gap.

ETA link. 970 points seperate him from #2 on the list. Most guys would kill for that many in a career.

The Big O doesn't get nearly enough mentions for best in his sport. The dude averaged a triple-double one season and came within a few boards of doing it again the next.

As for NFL, I like hearing Jerry Rice's name mentioned.

Football- ?

Hockey- Gretsky

Baseball- Ruth

Basketball- MJ

who do you think?

i'd have to agree with those. football is tough. it's easiest to say jerry rice, but i don't think WR has as much impact on the game as other positions. i almost think you have to go with a QB, but who? montana, elway, marino, unitas. maybe elway because he was such a stud athlete in addition to being a stud QB.

Pele in soccer might dispute the gap thing. No-one will ever break his goals records, not even get halfway there.

Ruth hit more home runs that the majority of teams did. he was a good pitcher as well. He is by far the best baseball player ever, and my opinion had the biggest gap of any player in his time, to any other sport, and any player in their time. .

What Ruth did would be like Gretsky scoring all those goals, and playing goalie at the same time. He doesnt compare to Babe.

Hard to argue w/ Oh's 868 homers. Not a dis to the Babe, but it is amazing as his 22 years and 9 MVP's is very remarkable.

Tough argument

Ruth was a living icon and legend and like sgt ryan said he hit more home runs by himself than whole teams did at a time when hitting home runs was so much harder than now

Gretzky amasses a ridiculous amount of pts but did so in a time when hockey was wide open , did so in the west where the game was even more wide open and their were some really bad teams , did so at a time when if I am not mistaken ( at least for part of huis career ) when the nhl offered 2 assists on every goal scored ( two players got an assist on every goal ) , did so at a time when goalie pads and eqpt were miniscule compared to now ..etc

He was still a great player ( the greatest ) but I think he had a lot of help padding those stats ...throw in the fact he never won a cup when he left edmonton and he never won a cup without messier and I am not sure at all that he can be considered the greatest in sports all time

Can't forget about michael jordan ...6 finals , 6 titles and 6 mvp's ...and bulls won them all without a real big man which up until that pt did not happen often at all

His competitiveness and desire to win were unmatched in sports I believe as was his ability to get the absolute most out of his teammates

If I had to pick one it would unfortunately be mj with babe ruth 2nd

Oscar Robertson damn near averaged a triple double over TWO STRAIGHT seasons, plus came a hair away a few other times - 9.7 ast to go with 10.1 reb in 60-61, 10.4 boards and 9.5 ast in 62-63, and 9.9 reb to go in 63-64.

Oh yeah, he scored about 30 a game back then as well. That's f*cking insane.

Big O's numbers were insane ...but that would make Wilt Chamberlains numbers completely ludicrous ...I think wilts numbers were a product of the size differential of him compared with every single guy covering him except for bill russell

Bottom line is that in the NFL and NBA, there is plenty of debate about best overall, so there isn't that tremendous of a gap. I used to prefer Wilt but am starting to lean towards Robertson these days, though I think in the NBA it should really be divided between backcourt and frontcourt when discussing greatest players.

I think Babe Ruth is pretty inarguably the best ever among MLB players, though not as huge of a gap between him and Mays, Aaron, Cobb, etc as there is between Gretzky and anyone else ever in the NHL - the scary part is the gaps could've been bigger, because Gretzky was still healthy and productive when he retired.

NFL, since that's the point of this thread - Az has a point that while Rice vs other WRs is a HUGE gap, and indicative of his talent, WRs can only have so much impact on the game. Still, his longevity and production vault him into the upper echelon. But if we're talking QBs, I need to go with Unitas above all - he retired with margins that were as big or bigger than Rice's at his position, and basically defined what the modern QB should be. Jim Brown, despite all the naysayers, was a phenomenal athlete who was a virtual force of nature during his entire career - and retired with significant margins ahead of all other runners. LT dominated games from the OLB position. Walter Payton not only had the ability and production, but I believe arguably the most desire of any player out there - AND he succeeded on what was a thoroughly sad-sack Bear team for a large chunk of his career.

But it's a flawed argument - you can talk about the glamour positions (QB, WR, RB, DE/OLB, DB) because they to some extent have quantifiable stats that can make up for lack of first-hand knowledge. But for all we know, the best player in NFL history may have been Jim Otto or Alan Page, who have no numbers to bulwark their arguments.

In defense of Wilt - check out his per-game numbers in 66-67 and 67-68 - he was dishing out about 8 assists per game, pulling down 24 boards, and oh-by-the-way hanging 24 ppg on about 67% shooting. That's maybe MORE impressive to me than the 50 pt/25 reb season he posted.

8 assists aren't due to size differential.

Oh was an absolute bad-ass, but to my knowledge he wasn't a 20-game winner who went 3-0 with a 0.87 ERA and 2 complete games in World Series play.

C

:D He has the most assists of all time. You call that stat padding?

Sets an NHL record for most goals in one season with 92 in 1981-82, breaking Phil Esposito's record of 76, set with Boston in 1970-71.

Breaks his own mark of most assists in a single season with 120 in 1981-82.

Nets 10 hat tricks in 1981-82 to garner yet another record.

Surpasses his own mark for most assists in a single season with 125 in 1982-83.

Notches an NHL record with a 30-game scoring streak during the 1982-83 season, surpassing Guy Lafleur's record of 28 in 1976-77.

Sets NHL Stanley Cup Playoff records during the 1983 postseason with 26 assists and 38 points.

Establishes a new record by notching at least one point in 51 consecutive games, tallying 61 goals and 92 assists for 153 points during the streak in 1983-84. The next longest streak is held by Mario Lemieux, who had a 46-game scoring streak in which he scored 39 goals and 103 points.

Sets an NHL record with 12 shorthanded goals and ties his own mark with 10 hat tricks during the 1983-84 season.

Leads the NHL in 1984-85 with a plus-98 rating. :D

Breaks his own single season record with 135 assists in 1984-85.

During the 1985 postseason, Gretzky rewrites the record books, with 30 assists and 47 points in one playoff year.

Gretzky keeps raising the bar for points in one season, including playoffs, registering 255 in 1984-85.

# Gretzky scores his 37th career three-goal-game on Jan. 8, 1986, tying Mike Bossy's career mark.

Gretzky wins eight consecutive Hart Trophies as the MVP of the League.

Yeah, a lot of padding going on there. Oh and by the way, Messier stated that the best player he ever played with was the Great One. Yeah, he had a great team in Edmonton but he was still putting up huge stats in St. Louis and LA without help. And he did go to the Stanley Cup with LA but lost to Montreal in 1993.

you did not read my post ..first i said he was the greatest ( i have been following hocley religously since 1977 ) ..secondly all the stats you threw out does nothing to dispute the argument that he played on a very talented team surrounded by great players in a pitiful weak conference , during a time when the NHL was wide open and the goalies played with tiny eqpt ..and when multiple assists were given out on EVERY goal scored

messier can state what he wants ..he won without Gretzky ( twice ) and gretzky never won without him

Football - Wes Welker

Hockey - Ty Domi

Baseball - Nick Punto

Basketball - Scott Roth

Ever see TIE Domi's wife? OMG...the very definition of hot!

On my list are some I never saw play, but I feel that had I seen them, I'd agree with those who have seen them and would put them on this list:

Baseball - Willie Mays

Football - Lawrence Taylor

Basketball - Michael Jordan

Hockey - Wayne Gretzky

NCAA Basketball - Pete Maravich

NCAA Football - Jim Brown

Borque never won one without Roy, does that make Borque less talented? I guess we will just have to disagree.

Bourque won one in his last season of professional hockey ..Gretzky had plenty of seasons to win one without messier

its cool though as i do agree Gretzky is the greatest in Hockey for sure ...just not the greatest in all of sports
