Outshined Posted July 11, 2007 Share Posted July 11, 2007 July 6, 2007 2007 Supplemental Draft Preview -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Scott Wright President, NFL Draft Countdown The Supplemental Draft is held before each season for players who want to enter the NFL but, for one reason or another, were not a part of the traditional draft. All 32 teams are involved in the three-step, weighted process. Teams with six wins or less in 2006 participate in the first lottery for the top six picks, followed by a second group of non-playoff teams and finally a third group of last season's 12 playoff teams. The process works by each team submitting the name of the player(s) they want as well as the round they would like to choose them in, with the highest "bid" being awarded the player. In the case of two teams submitting a request for the same player in identical rounds the team with the higher pick wins out. If a team uses a pick in the Supplemental Draft they forfeit their choice in the corresponding round of the next NFL Draft. More Info On Players Listed Here. godtomsatan Posted July 11, 2007 Share Posted July 11, 2007 Looks like there will be only three players chosen: Gaither, the OT out of Maryland; Oliver, the CB out of Georgia; and Chris Patrick, an OL from Nebraska. Found this nugget: If all three go, as expected, it would be the second most in the history of the draft. Five players – Walsh, Rosenbach, Humphery, RB Mike Lowman and DB Brett Young – were selected in ’89, the same year the top five of the college draft went like this: Troy Aikman, Tony Mandarich, Barry Sanders, Derrick Thomas, Deion Sanders. The San Diego Chargers selected Georgia cornerback Paul Oliver in the fourth round of Thursday's supplemental draft, one of two players selected from a pool of 11 available. In doing so, the Chargers will give up a fourth-round choice in next year's draft. Oliver, who left Georgia early because of grade problems, was expected to be one of the top corners in the 2008 draft. His recent 40 time in the high 4.5s may have scared away a couple of teams, but the Chargers were looking for depth at the cornerback position. Starting cornerback Drayton Florence is a free agent after this season. Oliver would have the chance to learn cornerback and maybe help in the nickel pass defense over the next couple of years. The Chargers liked the player skills. They recently did a background check and liked what they learned. The Baltimore Ravens selected Maryland tackle Jared Gaither in the fifth-round of the supplemental draft. The Ravens worked him out right before the draft. They liked his size and speed. He's close to 6 feet, 9 inches and 325 pounds. He ran well at a workout Tuesday, timing around 5 seconds. Meanwhile, Mark Washington, a versatile defensive end/linebacker from Texas State, agreed to a two-year deal with the San Francisco 49ers after being bypassed in the supplemental draft. Washington ran in the 4.6-second range in the 40-yard dash during workouts in front of NFL teams, but he was a little slower Tuesday when he worked out. Because Washington weighed in the 250-pound range, teams had to decide if they wanted him at defensive end or linebacker. The 49ers wanted him at linebacker and believe he has the ability and size to challenge for a position as a strong-side outside linebacker. Senior writer John Clayton covers the NFL for ESPN.com. He ran well at a workout Tuesday, timing around 5 seconds. How did he end up in the supplemental draft? Based on size alone, I'm surprised no one took him in the draft. EDIT: Ah-ha... grades. Friedgen disallowed him from playing in '07. I wonder if there's other issues. TSN had him ranked the 7th best OT in the nation and allowed ZERO sacks as a freshman.
