Can Les Miles shut up now?

This is a few days old, but I just heard about ol' Les' comments on a local SEC radio station:

“I can tell you that I would like nothing better than to play USC for the title,” Miles said in a speech that radio station WWL made available on its Web site…

“I can tell you this, that they have a much easier road to travel,” Miles said of the Trojans. “They’re going to play real knockdown drag-outs with UCLA and Washington, Cal-Berkley [sic], Stanford — some real juggernauts — and they’re going to end up, it would be my guess, in some position so if they win a game or two, that they’ll end up in the title (game). I would like that path for us.

“I think the SEC provides much stiffer competition.”

What a douchebag. Here is Carrolls' response on a local (L.A.) radio station:

"He's really taking a shot at all the other schools we play. Maybe the comments should come from the coaches at the other schools, including Charlie (Weis) at Notre Dame. He didn't slam us. He slammed all the other schools we play.''

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My thoughts, in no particular order

- Maybe Les can take some comfort in Cowherd's top 10 list.

- I still think SEC is the toughest football conf. in the country, but the Pac10 is no pushover. For every team he names, I could pick an SEC team (hello Vandy, KY and Ole Miss)

- Careful what you wish for: if Les gets his wish and meets USC in the big game, it could be demoralizing. With this as bulletin board material at USC all year, how sweet would it be for St. Pete's Trojans to beat LSU for a National Championship with a Louisiana QB and a Louisiana RB - who Pete stole from under his nose - in Louisiana at the Sugar Bowl! Man, my head is spinning - I kinda hope it happens that way now.....

- Of course, USC could stumble again and not even get there. If LSU wins it without playing USC, then Les gets to gloat for awhile.....

- Just another example of a non-media savvy coach who needs to keep his mouth shut.....

With LSU's schedule I don't think you can count them out of the title race this year. I think they are almost certainly BCS bound.

Sat, Sep 08 Virginia Tech 8:15 p.m.

Sat, Sep 15 Middle Tennessee 7:00 p.m.

Sat, Sep 22 South Carolina * 7:00 p.m.

Sat, Sep 29 Tulane (Louisiana Superdome) TBA (Might as well be a home game)

Sat, Oct 13 Kentucky * TBA

Sat, Oct 20 Auburn * 7:00 p.m.

Sat, Nov 03 Alabama * TBA

LSU plays in a tough conference, no debating that. But you can't knock USC for being a great team in a not quite as good conference. LSU wont make the title game, but they might be able to get some sweet seats for it if they start waiting now... :D

what a little buddy - considering the only teams SC ever loses to come from the Pac 10 he needs to shut his hole. The SEC is great- I love it as a football conference, but maybe he has some kind of hate for the Pac 10 and the west coast, since he has to live in Baton Rouge and travel thru all the dogchit towns that all the SEC schools are in.

Pac 10 owns the SEC in every sport, in every way.............always has, and always will. period.

Miles is simply playing up to the LSU fans who have grown tired of the Trojans being referred to as the 2003 NC. Personally, I think he should apologize to any team he might have offended. Granted the SEC may be the best conference in the land, but no need to brag just continue to show it on the field. Much like last year when a PAC1 team like Arizona was humbled 45-3 in a dogchit SEC town. :D

Wow Coffeeman you are right, a NC game in the Dome matching LSU vs USC does sound awesome! The radio talk shows down here were rockin last year at the mere mention of a possible Rose Bowl matchup last year. :D

Didnt LSU lose 2 games last yr, with Landry, Russll, Bowe and his opposite at Wr. Expect at least another 2 loses this yr, and they wont be in the NC game. So you should set your expectations accordingly.

What bowl did Arizona play in? LSU's defense will have to carry them, offense might struggle yeah yeah, there qb has "experience" but he's no Jamarcus Russell, better hope he's like Matt Mauck and just go in there and don't screw up. And USC says they are 2003 National Champions because the NCAA recognizes them as such. LSU fans must have some inferiority complex, you'd think they;d just be happy that the NCAA also recognizes them as 03 champs but apparently they want to continue to beat a dead horse.

Let's see two road losses. Auburn loss marked by some bad officiated while the only other loss happen in the Swamp to the eventual NC. IMO LSU could lose a game and still have a shot to make it to the NC game. .

LSU will lose 2 games minimum, and unless it plays ND in the bowl, will lose that game as well.

I don't see LSU going to the big show. That being said everything he said is pretty true. Should LSU win out it would be much more deserving than an undefeated USC team. Anyone that will not admit that the PAC 10 is a pansy conference is either a homer or doesn't watch much college football.

OK, I guess I can admit to being a homer, but not a blind one. The Pac10 does not shy away from tough non-conf. schedules like others do, and we have a full 9 game set against them all. And for every Stanford or Wazzou referenced by someone like Miles, we could name some pansies in the other conferences also.

I have no problem admitting the SEC is the toughest in conference, and has been for years. But when 2 of USC's 3 losses in the last 2 years are from the Pac10 (plus 1 by the VY-led Horns,) it tells me the jokers who say USC has a cakewalk every year are either homers or don't watch enough ball themselves either.....

Lets see you play 8 games a yr vs Pac 10 teams, and 3-4 vs non pac 10 teams. The odds are twice as high you will lose a game vs the Pac 10. Thus 2 vs Pac 10 and 1 vs Texas. simple mathematics. And when you play a team over and over and over, its easier to prepare for them, than vs a team you dont play all the time.

Excellent math there - I can tell you did your homework in school. But you missed the point: the SEC/Big 12/Big10+1 homers would have you believe all the USC loses would come from the 'vastly superior' teams from thier conferences, not the Pac10 - but that's not the case.

I'll be more clear in making my point now: USC has lost 4 games in 4 years, 3 to the Pac10 and 1 to Tx. Another 40-50 seconds on the clock and they probably would've beaten the Horns also, despite a no-show from the D that made VY look like a god. Coach Carroll hasn't lost a game by more than 7 points in over 5 years - I'm not sure many teams could say that in NCAA history.

In that time, they absolutely spanked the following non-conf teams: Sooners (in BCS title), VaTech, AuburnX2, ArkansasX2, NebraskaX2, MichiganX2 (Rose bowls), ND X4 ('05 was admittedly a close one). Plus some scrubs like HI, Col. State, BYU, etc. If the 1st Michigan Rose Bowl had been vs. LSU in the BCS instead, we'd have less of this bogus crap from the Tiger fans, unwilling to share what they know is a mythical title since there is no playoff and they didn't have to play USC.

So, there you have it....

Nice to see Coach Miles interviewed before Pete Carroll on ESPN's new Football show. Thought he handled the question about his comments about USC and the Pac 10 pretty nicely. My guess is that when Pete Caroll appears he'll welcome the opportunity to address the Miles comments versus having to address questions regarding Reggie Bush.

Asked Monday about his recent comments regarding the Southern California football team and the Pac-10 Conference, Miles said they were more about how much respect he has for the Southeastern Conference than a slap at the Trojans.

“Hey, this is a bad news time,” said Miles, a guest on ESPN’s “College Football Live.” “That’s all there could be. I can only tell you that I have great respect for the Pac-10 Conference as a whole. I can tell you USC has been a great team — no matter what anybody says — for years and certainly we would love to be in the national championship game.”

"I can tell you it was more of a pride in the SEC and understanding we play a pretty competitive schedule,” he told ESPN’s Rece Davis. “We finish our season with a championship game. The championship game certainly throws another great opponent at a neutral site at the end of the season and that makes the hurdle in the SEC even a little higher.”

Miles was asked if had talked to USC coach Pete Carroll about his comments.

“I would only hope that Pete Carroll is not concerned with any of this conversation,” he said. “It’s nothing but speculative and so far away from a season’s end and so close to a beginning to a very important schedule for both he and I.”

Miles also said that the arrival of former Tigers coach Nick Saban at Alabama hasn’t impacted his job in Tigertown.

“It doesn’t seem to have impacted it a lick,” he said. “I can only tell you we’ll look forward (to playing) the team that he’ll coach.

“Never in my coaching career, whether in Dallas or at Oklahoma State or at Michigan have I just really got along with those teams that were in red.” :D

this is so tired..... The Pac 10 has been ranked near the top of the conference rankings damn near every year. They play the toughest NC games of any conference, and USC has always had thier toughest games in Pac 10 matchups, while they thump ALL of their NC foes in any conference. The SEC probably has more quality teams, other than that no other conference has tougher, quality opponents in conference week in and out than in the PAC. The Big 10? please, Big 12? not a chance in hell- conference is as soft as they come.........

The Pac 10 conference is by far the weakest in the country, of the 6 major conferences. SC is the only consistent team in this conference. The rest may get up for one game or another, but other than beating up on themseleves, are mediocre at best. Cal just got tore a new ass by a non contending tennesse team. Hell Texas Tech tore Cal a new ass in the bowl before that. Oregon was ranked #6 in the country a few yrs back and a Big 12 #3 team OU beat them in the bowl. SC's last National Title game, they got beat by Texas. So I hardly think overall The Pac 10 is better than the Big 12. that statement is just ridiculous. Just because unranked UCLA can beat SC, doesnt make the conference as a whole good, it just means the best in the conference isnt as good as many thought. Why Left coasters cant understand that, is beyond me.

You take SC out of that conference, and they dont belong ahead of the Mountain West conference.

no one outside of Texas and the rest of your backwater conference thinks the Big 12 is a better league than the Pac 10- period. Any knowledgable college foootball fan knows the Pac 10 has better quality teams and provides a higher quality of football week in and week out. You seriously think an unranked UCLA beating USC shows the conference is not any good? solid logic. WHat about the NC domination USC has shown over the years- every other team in EVERY conference they have thumped. Doesn't show any weakness in the Pac 10- it shows strength you d*phuk

Throw OU or UT in the Pac 10......please, they are dropping 2-3 games in conference.

Having lived in Texas and now the 'left coast' I'd say that if YOU don't understand that UCLA or Cal-Berkley playing USC tough isn't the equivalant of OkSt playing OU tough, or A&M playing UT tough when the smaller school really _shouldn't_ be that particular game then you don't understand college rivalries and how emotional the kids from smaller schools get when they play the 'big ones.'
