Free Agent Pickups

Waivers were always the one factor we struggled with year in and year out. When we switched to an anction league four years ago, we decided to use live auction for waivers as well.

Each team gets $100 auction dollars for the season. Once you run out, you cannot bid. Auction dollars can be traded, however. Bids are placed on the message board for all to see, and bidding ends at 10:30 pm EST on Wednesday nights. High bidders win their respective players. Then, beginning at 12 pm on Thursday, FCFS starts and runs until Sunday mornings. FCFS costs nothing.

This combination has worked well for us, and is a real benefit to those who stay on the message board until 10:30.

Blind bid early in the week followed by first come, first serve until the start of games that week.

Worst first is ridiculous - it actually rewards bad owners. First come, first serve only is just as bad - it gives some owners an advantage simply because they have access to a computer when waivers open. Ordered rotation (a team picking a player off the WW goes to the bottom of the list and the other teams move up) randomly places teams in position to grab a top FA when they come up during the season.

Open waivers is a little better than the methods above, but it does allow lazy owners to jump into bidding on good players after more savvy owners have to post their bid - but it does allow owners to decide what their squeal point is on how valuable a player is to their squad and there can be some good games of chicken between competing owners on some free agents.

Blind bidding allows savvy owners to keep potential break out players hidden and allows all owner equal access to all free agentss while also allowing them to determine how valuable a player is to their squad and consequently how much they should bid, as well as allowing each owner to determine how to manage their FA purse throughout the season. You can't ask for more than that in FF. The first come, first serve after the blind bidding period allows owners to react to late injury news in the week after all owners have had equal access to free agents during the blind bidding period.

As far as how much to give each team at the biginning of the season - that's all relative. A league that allows $100 per team might see a $25 bid for a top FA while a league that allows a $1,000,000 purse might see a $250,000 bid for the same player. Leagues can limit the number of waiver wire moves somewhat by keeping purses low and allowing only whole dollar bids - a league with say a $25 purse and bids in increments of $1 would create a maximum of 25 moves throughout the season while most teams would have less than that depending upon how they chose to make their bids.

Most of my leagues do the worst-first waiver early in the week followed by FCFS at any time.

My auction league does open bidding on a message board thru Thursday followed by a FCFS period until gametime for the minimum amount. In this league, you max bid is based on your salary cap and how much room you have available (in addition to the room created by cutting a player to create roster space).

If your league is less hardcore and with more beginning type owners, I'd suggest the worst to first waiver system. It is simpler which is good for owners getting used to our game. If you are a league full of savvy owners, then I would prefer blind bids up to a certain point (with a fixed allcoation each year for each team if a draft league, or based on cap room if an auction/salary cap league) followed by a first come first serve period.

I do not care for the "open" waiver whereby it is essentially FCFS at any time for any free agent and any dropped player is on a "waiver" for x amount of time. This creates an unfair advantage for the owners that are able to be at their computer all the time IMO.
