Not "officially" in that there's been no announcement or press conference. His doctors, however, have pretty much done the retiring for him.

Edwards is going young too. Last I heard on this-

Chiefs :: RB

Door Left Open For RB P.Holmes

Tom Orsborn, San Antonio Express -

Discussions have ensued between Kansas City Chiefs RB Priest Holmes and Chiefs general manager Carl Peterson concerning what the future may hold and the direction they may or may not decide to go. Holmes, under contract through the 2009 season, said he is not feeling any pressure from the club as to his decision. The Chiefs have told him that "The key is underneath the mat" if he wishes to return. Holmes said he plans to meet with team physicians soon.

He's hanging out collecting paychecks and has no intention to return.

Er, maybe not.

There was a report ("breaking story" they called it) Tuesday night on 610 Sports, one of KC's sports talk radio stations, that Priest Holmes is undergoing medical evaluations, and that if he passes one final test on Wednesday the 25th, he will be officially cleared to begin practicing with the Chiefs. Rhonda Moss, the local reporter who broke this story, claims that the Chiefs are planning to use Holmes as a "3rd down back" this season--assuming of course he passes the final medical exam and is cleared to practice.

Obviously, this could be huge news, especially with the reports about LJ holding out. Holmes' presence at the Chiefs camp would at the least hurt LJ's leverage, one would think. Whether Priest can be anything close to the RB he was two years ago remains to be seen, but who knows?

Of course if he fails the test, all of this will be quickly forgotten.

I'll keep following this and will try to report back if/when anything new is reported in the local media.

Chalk me up as skeptical.

Last season, and even during this off season, it is reported that Priest was one hit away from paralysis. Now, with LJ threateining to sit out and the Chiefs making it clear (with their ridiculous demands) that he will not be traded, all of a sudden Priest is healthy enough to play?

I am not a conspiracy theorist but sorry...I am not buying this at all.

Rhonda Moss has done this in the past. She always throws sh.it at the wall, and most times it doesn't stick.

The only reason Priest has not officially retired is that he would most likely have to pay back a portion of his signing bonus. And Priest is all about his money.

My apologies! I misunderstood what was reported this morning. Priest is still supposed to get one final medical exam today, and then we'll know if he can practice.

They're definitely making it sound like this is going to happen. Not sure if that's based on inside info, or if they're just jumping the gun.

Of course there is also the possibility that Priest will simply retire.

Now Adam Schefter is saying it appears to be a done deal.

This is fascinating. Holmes is making sure he gets all his money. The Chiefs don't want to pay him, but having him around allows the Chiefs a supposed prybar for negotiatoins with Johnson. Its a big 3 way "who blinks first" shaping up.
