URLACHERisGOD
The Browns will avoid a holdout with their top draft pick, offensive lineman Joe Thomas, after reaching a deal late Thursday night, according to a report in the Plain Dealer. Thomas, taken third overall in April's draft, agreed to a six-year, $42.5 million deal with about $23 million in guarantees. He is the highest draft pick to have reached a deal so far. The team also reportedly reached a deal with second-round pick Eric Wright, who shares an agent with Thomas and is expected to sign in the morning. Both are expected to join the team at camp Friday afternoon. This leaves quarterback Brady Quinn as the only unsigned draft pick. He was taken with the 22nd pick in the draft, but his agent is said to be looking for a deal more commensurate with a top 10 pick.
loaf
good luck on Brady getting top 10 money. I'm excited about Thomas and Wright not missing any time though...
muck
I heard on Sirius that he just received more guaranteed money than any offensive lineman in the history of the NFL. Vets need to be paid more and rookies need to be paid less.

Sure it is. Theyre the ones that hold out just because the guy in front of him signed for more. If they all felt the same way we do, they would all sign what they are worth which could be very little to a lot.

Something tells me that if you were a first round draft pick in the NFL that you might feel a bit differently...
Sturphy
The NFL could really use a rookie wage scale like the NBA.
peepinmofo
Something tells me that if you were a first round draft pick in the NFL that you might feel a bit differently... Perhaps, but I am a more modest person. I actually realize that whether I got paid 5mil or 10mil, Id still be rich. Id let my performance do the talking, not my agent. When the time comes for me to make my money, I will either get it from my team, or go elsewhere. That said, as we know, contracts are not guaranteed, so I can see somewhat how they feel. peepinmofo
Ding, ding, ding! You just hit the nail square on the head. But is the difference between 5mil and 7mil really worth holding out? I mean, isnt 5mil still more than enough money to at least get you in to camp?

They wanna get paid monster bucks too. I read somewhere that one of the reasons there is no wage scale for rookies may be because guys like Gene Upshaw are represented by these agents too. I think the big agents have more power than we realize.
Cameltosis
Define worth. I would guess a 3rd pick in the NFL draft would hold out to get 3rd pick money. That IS his worth. I think you are naive if you say you wouldnt hold out to get it. You have one shot to sign a contract that isnt guaranteed in a sport that often sees career ending injuries in the blinnk of an eye. I would want as much cash as I could get. Now, if I play in the league for years and have more money than my grandkids can spend in their life, and I have the chance to drop a buck or two to get a guy who will help me win a ring, I might consider that. I don't know about you, but I think I could find a way to wisely invest that extra $2M so that all my grandkids could start their lives as millionaires.
