Randall
James Jones, 3rd round pick. 2 scouts earlier called him a stronger Greg Jennings. When hurt last year Jennings was on a 1100 yards 10 TD pace. Earlier this spring GB liked how Jones created separation near the LOS and caught the ball away from his body with his hands. To me Jones and Jennings remind me a lot of Driver. Now that Drivr is sitting... "Insider: Jones takes advantage of working out with first team Thumbs up Sometimes early in training camp, skill position players flash and then just as quickly disappear. It's early, but rookie receiver James Jones doesn't appear to match that description. After a solid first day of camp, the third-round draft pick from San Jose State jumped out on Sunday, especially during the important full pads practice in the evening. With No. 1 receiver Donald Driver out due to a shoulder injury, Jones got plenty of opportunities with the No. 1 offense. To say he took advantage would be an understatement. In the night practice alone, Jones caught at least six passes during team (11-on-11) periods while lined up with the starters. Quarterback Brett Favre seemingly had little or no hesitation about throwing to Jones. Favre connected with him twice on slant patterns, twice on short in-routes in traffic, once on a crossing pattern and once on a deep ball. Perhaps most impressive was the slant Jones caught against starting cornerback Al Harris. Jones likely would have been picked higher than Round 3 had he run better than a 4.59 40-yard dash, but for a guy who supposedly lacked speed, he had no trouble beating cornerback Antonio Malone deep down the sideline. Though the 6-foot-1 Jones differs physically from the smaller Greg Jennings (5-11), he's similar in that from the outset Jones has run precise routes and has caught the ball with ease. That was noticeable with Jennings in camp last year, and he parlayed that into a strong rookie season. Early indications are that Jones could do the same. Randall
From today "Bring in the noise The Packers pumped crowd noise through speakers during situational team drills this morning at Clarke Hinkle Field. It had little impact on quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers, Ingle Martin and Paul Thompson, who were a combined 18-for-26 over two periods. Highlights included: -- Two great catches by rookie receiver James Jones. First, he elevated over Patrick Dendy for a ball from Aaron Rodgers in the front right corner of the end zone. Then, he fully extended to haul in a high Paul Thompson pass near the back of the end zone. -- Donald Driver's first two receptions in team portions of camp: a sprawling grab on the sixth play of the second team period, and a wide-open grab in the end zone off a throw from Brandon Jackson." http://www.packersnews.com/includes/newspa...der/index.shtml

Randall
Mark Craig of the Minneapolis Star Tribune is making the rounds of NFL training camps, and has this to say about the Packers' training camp. "Sorry, Vikings fans. But if one must attend an NFL training camp, it doesn't get any better than standing in the shadows of the Don Hutson Center, looking onto Clarke Hinkle Field as Lambeau Field towers majestically in the background. "From the classic uniforms to the festival atmosphere to Lombardi-era tradition of players pedaling bikes to and from practice with the young owners of those bikes riding along, the place feels more like a museum than an NFL workplace." Randall
The Packers are going to be fun to watch this year. AJ Hawk(on training camp coverage) saying he thinks the D will take over games this year. Harrell will help keep blockers off the LB's if he can stay healthy. I like that pick. DMD
With Favre on a quest to throw for over 3800 yards and snag his final all-time record, he is going to need for players to step up since the Packers did him no favors in free agency. Definitely worth watching here.

Randall
For anyone with Driver or Jennings(or boith like me ) you should take a flyer on this guy. Picked him up in round 18 in the Ladder draft. "A few notes from Tuesday's night practice that didn't get posted ... -- A day after the defensive backs won the 1-on-1 passing drills for the first time in camp, the Packers receivers had an 11-6 edge. Rookie James Jones burned Al Harris twice, the second with a leaping grab on a fade that warranted a high-five from the veteran cornerback." Bronco Billy
It's extremely satisfying to watch a guy who you drafted in the 6th round of a dynasty draft 1 week after the NFL draft progressing nicely so early in the year. Thanks for the news.

Thanks for the news. Or in round 3. The thing I love most about him is he catches the ball with his hands. I see the Packers surprising a lot of people this year and taking their spot back atop the NFC Norris.

Randall
Uh, if WRs at this level have not developed this skill, they are not going to last long. That's true but it's how well you can do it when Brian Dawkins is bearing down on you that matters.

Chavez
Uh, if WRs at this level have not developed this skill, they are not going to last long. Antonio Freeman was a body-catcher. He did OK. Generally, though, I agree - guys who body-catch make my teeth grind.

Randall
he's been moving up the rankings and will move up yet again A month ago a story said one scout compared him to Sterling or Boldin and I thought it was over the top but he looks a little like Boldin now. If he can get enough playing time.
Vichawkfan
Jones looks a lot like Javon Walker to me. Strong and fluid looking. After tonight, I'm convinced he's going to be the #2....and with Driver out for a while by the looks of it - a pretty solid WR3 on anyones team. reality
I agree with everything you said. I drafted him in the 12 th round and feel he will become a regular must start WR as the season goes on. With Driver now sidelined with an ankle injury (unkown how serious) he may continue to see more pass attempts his way, and why not, he had only one miscue thus far in the preseason with a fumble after the catch. Good size, good strength, nice hands and terrific pass route runner. Has the making of a future 100 plus catch season. maybe a stretch but I would compare him to Marvin Harrison with his ability to get open and catch the ball. Match him with a finesse QB and he will SI cover material.
