Tony Ugoh opens camp as starting left Tackle

Tony Ugoh was described as the eventual replacement for left offensive tackle Tarik Glenn when the Indianapolis Colts selected him in the second round of the April draft.

The rookie found himself on an accelerated learning curve today when the team went through its first training-camp practice at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. He was the starting left tackle with the offense.

“I wasn’t surprised,’’ Ugoh said. “I talked to (offensive line coach Howard Mudd) yesterday after the meeting and he pretty much gave me a briefing on how the day was going to go.’’

Many observers had speculated that second-year pro Charlie Johnson would open camp at the left tackle spot, which was made vacant when Glenn announced his retirement last week. Instead, Johnson took repetitions as Ryan Diem’s backup at right tackle.

“A decision was made to go ahead and put Tony in there and I’m running with it,’’ Johnson said. “I’m behind the decision that was made 100 percent.’’

The only reason I think Diem has a reputation for not being a "great" pass-blocker is that game a couple years ago against the roided-up Merriman. He's actually pretty good for a RT. I do agree that he would probably not be as good at left tackle though . . .

So does the Colt offense click like normal or will the new faces on the O-line disrupt Peyton & Co.?

only one new face.

they will be fine.

see my other post about Tarik retiring. It has some stats from the six games he missed for Peyton and Edge.

I think that you may see more two-TE sets than they anticipated running (with Utect lined up on the left side to help out Ugoh) or possibly Addai kept in to block more often. As an Addai owner, the latter scenario would suck somewhat.

But I don't see their offense taking a significant hit. The Colts have had a lot of turnover on that line since Mudd has been there and they've always been at least above average.

Makes sense but you always have to worry about a QB's blind side especially when it's a young OL. Not everyone can step right in like McNeal in San Diego and be a stud as a rookie. Manning is probably the least hit QB in the league. Along with getting rid of the ball on time without taking shots, he enjoys a lot of time to throw. I'm also concerned about Addai because I like him a lot. Is Ugoh a good run blocker or better in pass protection? This bears watching in the preseason.

He's presumably pretty good at both, given that Polian traded next year's first-round pick to take him in the early second round and planned Ugoh to be Glenn's eventual successor. The LT position in Indy is obviously going to have to pass-block well, but will also need to run-block effectively, as they run the stretch play off tackle all of the time.
