Some 2007 NFL Rule Changes

The Vikings have brought in some Officials to discuss some of the upcoming NFL rule changes for 2007. Thought you might like to see some of them.

  • Delay of game will be a point of emphasis for officials in 2007. A player who spikes or throws the ball in the field of play after a down has ended, except after a touchdown, will be penalized.
  • The timing regarding excess timeouts during the last two minutes of a half has been changed. The effect of the new rule states that: (The rule) eliminates requirement that the score is tied or the offense is behind in order for a ten-second runoff to apply when there is an excess timeout after the two-minute warning. Thus, the ten-second runoff is at the option of the defense. A team out of timeouts who sustains an injured player with under two minutes remaining in the half is not charged for an extra timeout.
  • The crowd noise procedure has been deleted from the rule book. Previously, a referee could penalize the home team for excess crowd noise.
  • Referees will also make it a point of emphasis to have players button each chin strap. There will be no penalties enforced for failure to comply, but the player may be requested to leave the game for one play.
