Your Gators would be the poster boys for overachievement if they can do this, and its likely just part of the glow of being the champs in both b-ball and football - lots of good mojo and press. They would need to go 3-1 in their first 3 games for me to consider them a top 25 team. I am relieved that ND is not in the top 25 preseason polls because now I don't have to listen to all the ignorant jealous rants and whines of the anti-ND morons who hurl blanket accusations of ND being over-rated, over-hyped and a media darling. But I also wasn't the least bit surprised. Speed kills and LSU was faster at every position. In years past this may have been true, but over the last few seasons most national sports media outlets love to take plenty of shots at the Tide - some are deserved, some are not. Exhibit A: Late last year, the talking heads at ESPN, Fox Sports, Jim Rome, etc. consistently berated Alabama for days when the story leaked that WVU head coach Rich Rodriquez had been offered the Tide job then turned it down to stay at West Virginia. Of course, the story went, no decent coach would want the Alabama job. It was a backwards state with a failing program, blah, blah, blah. Most media types failed to agressively report how Rodriquez had used the Alabama offer to significantly sweeten and lengthen his deal with West Virgina. A job he had very little intention of leaving. Exhibit B: A few days later when rumors began circulating that Nick Saban was on the TIde's short list, the talking heads were again in full swing... "Alabama is nuts! Nick Saban would NEVER leave the NFL to coach at Alabama...yada, yada, yada." When Saban did accept the Tide job a few weeks later, he was crucified by the national press. He was called a liar and worse for basically doing the what most coaches do when they are offered another job.... They deny it. Sometimes they deny it right up until the time they accept the new job. Is it attractive? No, but you would have thought Saban had murdered someone with the press he was getting. Of course when a true sports media darling (Billy Donavan) does the same thing a few months later, hardly a negative word is written. I actually think Saban and Alabama are going to have a tough road to hoe with the college football press (i.e. pollsters) for the forseeable future. It can be a very malicous and self-serving group. Saban is by all regards, a complete egotistical a$$hole (perfect to handle the "good old boys" that can't come to grips with the fact that the BAHR is gone forever) while Billy Donovan, might well be an a$$hole, but you wouldnt know it, because he conducts himself with class. However... I find what Donovan did far worse than what Saban did. Donovan accepted the deal, and then backed out, while Saban simply, like you said, did what all coaches do, deny it until the time is right (why in the world would he say it during the season? thats stupid). I actually think Saban and Alabama are going to have a tough road to hoe with the college football press (i.e. pollsters) for the forseeable future. It can be a very malicous and self-serving group. I think Saban will have a much tougher road to hoe dealing with his own Alabama faithful than any football press. Imagine Saban's thoughts after Bama packed in 90,000 plus to watch a scrimmge game by a team who ended their season with four consecutive losses to finish 6-7. Can't tell me expectations in Bama aren't HIGH! My guess is the fan base in Bama has already started talking about how mistreated they are by the press for leaving them out of the AP preseason rankings. Maybe that they couldn't stop a barely 1A team last year in the Fiesta Bowl and lost on a statue of liberty play leads some of us to believe that they simlply are not Top Ten material, given how their season ended. Ask anyone who follows college FB which team consistently gets more run than it deserves and you'll find a whole lot of "anti-ND morons". The only reason they were even in the mix last year was because they had a pillowy soft schedule and were ranked too high from the outset. Pre-season #2, I believe and they squeak past a GTech team with a QB who is basically incapable of running an offense. Then they get absolutely pummeled by UM, yet, on the strength of basically playing even with a maybe top 25 team and getting completely out-classed by an elite team, they remain in the top 10. If some mid-tier ACC, Big East, or Pac 10 team starts off like that, they're lucky to be ranked afterwards. Honestly, I don't "hate" ND. I just find it completely irritating that they do get a free pass nearly year. Unless they make it abundantly clear that they are simply not good at all, they get the benefit of the doubt. Ask Auburn fans how much that can be worth when the only thing they did wrong a few years back was start out the season outside the top 15. You also have to realize the amount of people who are not going to looking kindly on the fact that they are basically assured a BCS bid unless they are putrid. I mean, name one other school who's going to earn an at-large bid despite losing, not once, but twice by 20 or more pts. To claim that ND is not a "darling" is certifiable myopia. I'm not saying you need to join the legion of fans who are clamoring against this. It's sort of like when your team is getting all the calls and you know at least a few are pretty damned iffy.
