Looking for opinions on marginal LBs

Recommended Posts

Looking for some opinions on some fringe FF LBs and how they shape up for this coming season and the next few seasons:

Mark Simoneau - figured he was on the scrap heap, but apparently has re-emerged in NO and is making a strong play for the starting MLB job. The add that Simmons tweaked his knee. Can this guy emerge as a full season starter? he seems to fade as the year goes on even when he did get a chance to play.

Tulla Banta-Cain - moved over to SF and has apparently grabbed the designated pass rush LB spot. He's big & athletic & might fit SF's plans very well, and he's still young, plus he's playing on a D that is quietly getting much better. He looked solid last night vs DEN in the preseason game.

James Anderson - Fighting with Diggs for the WLB in CAR, and now Diggs is hurt. Seems to have a good skill set and might fit in very nicely next to Beason if Beason goes to the MLB spot, which he figures to do.

Omar Gaither - thought he'd have a shot this year to play WLB in PHI, but then they picked up Spikes. Not sure what to make of that, whether it is a push to get experience for a playoff run this year or whether they just don't have confidence in Gaither.

John DiGiorgio - Rookie has apparently made a splash & is given annoited star rookie LB Posluszny a run for his money at MLB. He's also been running some with the 1st team D - and he's currently listed as the 1st team MLB at the Bills' site. Could he push Pozluzsny over to SLB and Crowell back over to WLB, giving BUF a very formidable LB corps?

Mark isnt anything special but if the opportunity is there to start the entire yr then yeah he could end up as a LB3 but I would be a bit more cautious with my optimism and expect LB4 numbers(if simmons takes over he goes to the scrap heap)...

I dont think that TBC will really do much of anything this yr...worthy of LB3 if your scoring system is super sack heavy otherwise I look elsewhere.

James Anderson - Fighting with Diggs for the WLB in CAR, and now Diggs is hurt. Seems to have a good skill set and might fit in very nicely next to Beason if Beason goes to the MLB spot, which he figures to do.

I think you could still easily see a platoon of sorts with anderson and diggs but anderson does present some upside just not sure LB3 is what it would be come the end of the year. Anderson does present future value as a LB3 imo

Omar Gaither - thought he'd have a shot this year to play WLB in PHI, but then they picked up Spikes. Not sure what to make of that, whether it is a push to get experience for a playoff run this year or whether they just don't have confidence in Gaither.

Gaither is the HEIR to the MLB position and was going to play WLB prior to the Spikes signing....i dont look at the spikes signing as a knock on Gaither but a hedge on Trotter....if his knees dont hold up Gaither will take over...I also think as the season wears on that Gaither is going to see more time but to expect LB3 numbers when he will mainly be playing in nickel situations is a reach...his value is LB2 or better in dynasty leagues, IMO

Ellison evidently has been shining in training camp so I dont think he is gonna lose the WLB gig.....DiG is a feel good story but in the end I dont see him keeping Poz on the bench and with that said I think LB3 is a big reach for him.

Tough to add more than Keg just did except to say that Gaither is a guy to watch for sure. Dont count on alot from him the first half of the season but he could be (and I think will be) fantasy gold the second half!

Can this guy emerge as a full season starter? he seems to fade as the year goes on even when he did get a chance to play. I think he'll definitely start the entire season. His chemistry with the rest of the defense should give him the edge over Simmons all year. Still, he'd be a marginal #3 LB. He played quite a bit last year and was barely in the top 100.

I'm not a fan of starting 3-4 OLBs in IDP leagues, and if you are, you can do a lot better than Banta-Cain.

James Anderson - Fighting with Diggs for the WLB in CAR, and now Diggs is hurt. Seems to have a good skill set and might fit in very nicely next to Beason if Beason goes to the MLB spot, which he figures to do. I might be in the minority here, but Anderson being unable to unseat Na'il Diggs sets off some alarm bells. I mean, he's not a rookie anymore, so it's not an experience thing. I saw Diggs play in Green Bay, and he was nothing special when he left. With Beason looking like a very good WLB and Seward starting to show he can back up Morgan in the middle, I see no reason to invest anything in Anderson.

Omar Gaither - thought he'd have a shot this year to play WLB in PHI, but then they picked up Spikes. Not sure what to make of that, whether it is a push to get experience for a playoff run this year or whether they just don't have confidence in Gaither.Pretty much agree with Keg on this one. It all depends on your faith in Trotter. If you think Trotter is done by Week 3, then Gaither will be an excellent value. Otherwise, he won't be close to an LB3.

I also agree with Keg on the WLB position -- Ellison has it locked up. Plus, there's nothing to suggest Poz would be able to step right into the SLB position, anyway. IF DiGiorgio wins the MLB spot, Poz will simply be the first LB off the bench. The problem is that it's a BIG "if." Unless I owned Poz, I wouldn't even waste the time e-mailing a waiver bid for DiG.

It was decided that Poz and DiGeorgio would alternate starting preseason games...DiGeorgio gets the start friday but Poz is WAY outplaying him.

He will be the starting mike week one.

In New Orleans keep a watchful eye on Marvin Mitchell who has played pretty well in camp & preseason. He may not supplant either Simoneau or Simmons this year, but he's worth a roster or DTS spot in deeper leagues.

any word on Anwtan Barnes on Baltimore? He was making some impression but was carted off the field a few games back.. I think hes back in practice, but not sure if hes starting or not

he is currently listed as a backup on baltimores depth chart

INJURY UPDATE: Rookie outside linebacker Antwan Barnes returned to practice, but was limited in some drills. With a nagging, right high ankle sprain, Barnes is likely to be a game-time decision Friday against the Atlanta Falcons.
