Sgt. Ryan
The scoring of those rankings, place a high regard to tackles. And quite frankly, I dont see 17 sacks coming this yr. I am working on the next update, and he will get a boost, based on some players above him play this preseason. But I in the scoring described, I wouldnt expect Merriman to be a top 35 LB this yr. SheikYerbuti
Just wondering why is has droped so low on the cheatsheets, #46, I was wondering the same thing. . . In my league's scoring system, I prorated his '06 stats for a full season and he would have been the 4th highest scorer in the NFL behind only Ryans, Briggs and Fletcher. That was using: Tackle Solo (2) Sack (4) Interception (4) Fumble Force (2) Fumble Recovery (3) I just assumed the drop was all about his off-season surgery. In our system: Solo - 2 Asst - 1 Sack - 3 Int - 3 FF - 3 FR - 2 He was the 13th LB, based on Weekly Average. His value would be a little higher in a league that gives 4 pts for a sack
keggerz
you will rarely if ever see me ranking an OLB very high even if they are able to put up strong PPGs...what that doesnt show is the inconsistency that they have and if they are a big name like Merriman you arent going to have the luxury of making him a LB3.....of course this is with regards to tackle heavy leagues. A stud RB will score somewhere in the range of 15 - 22 TD's in a good year (never mind that Tomlinson freak). A top of the line D player will wind up with between 10 and 20 sacks. With the scoring system I'm in, that seems pretty evenly weighted. On the D side, a solo tackle is like a RB busting a 20 yard run. . .good but not amazing. A sack is the equivelant of a TD on the other side of the ball. Does this seem out of proportion? And it bumps Merriman way up, BTW Edited August 18, 2007 by SheikYerbuti

I don't. I do think sacks deserve a much larger role in the scoring system. No one asks at the end of the year who won the tackles title. The only things people want to know are: 1. Who rushed for the most yards 2. Who scored the most TD's 3. Who won the sacks title 4. Maybe who won the Super Bowl. . . .

Well, I just got back from my first draft (3 IDP slots in addition to 1 D/ST) and they didn't get the message. Merriman was the 3rd IDP player taken, behind Urlacher and Zach Thomas. I wound up with DeMeco Ryans, Lance Briggs and Aaron Kampman. I feel good about it.
Sgt. Ryan
This is off topic but does anyone think Stephen Cooper could surprise this year? absolutely, and he will be moving onto the big board next week. Merriman had 2 solo tackles in almost a half of football last night. If he doesnt get a sack, he is worthless to your team. Merriman will obviously have huge weeks, but weeks he doesnt score more than 2-4 pts, and his inconsistency drops him considerably, as well as where his final finish will be in this scoring. hutchprime
Is Matt Wilhelm taking Edwards spot at ILB? Any upside seen for him? Edwards was always pretty decent in that slot and Wilhelm was good in college...
Sgt. Ryan
Wilhelm doesnt have 1/10th the talent Donnie Edwards has. Even if he plays ILB, dont assume the stats will be the least bit similar. Wilhelm was the punk who chocked Wisconsin QB Sorgi as OSU was losing at the end of that game. This dude was a fraud in college, and will be at best a 1 yr gap before Waters, SIler or Cooper boots him out of the starting lineup. Edited August 23, 2007 by Sgt. I have heard pimp Merriman in the same breath as Ryans, Bulluck, Pierce and co, when in reality he more than likely will never come anywhere close to putting up the numbers those other guys do. I have read good things about his progress including backing up both of the ILB spots in the Chargers D. Also FWIW, I dont think Wilhem will put up numbers close to Edwards, but I don't think a top 25 finish is out of the question if he starts the entire season. In my scoring system from last year: Ryans - 282 points Bulluck - 235 points Pierce - 243 points Merriman - (in 12 games played) 189 points Project 189 points in 12 games over a 16 game season and that's 251 points. So, tell us again about reality?

So, tell us again about reality? Of course a lot of it is going to depend on the scoring system but my point was like Sarge mentioned if he is held to low sack numbers on a given week, he will more than likely not break double digits. That is what I meant by comparing him to the other LBs I mentioned. In the scoring that is used in most of my leagues, Bulluck, Ryans, and Pierce only had 3 single digit scoring games COMBINED. For my money, I would rather have the consistant points from the guys I mentioned than depend on Merriman having a big game every week, especially when we do not know how he will perform off the juice. To make a point of the different scoring system, here is how they finished in my leauges: Ryans - 313 points Bulluck - 285 points Pierce - 277 points Merriman - (in 12 games played) 191 points

So it seems what you're actually saying is, you prefer players who specialize in high tackle numbers rather than players who are in contention for the sack title. It seems both of our scoring systems favor players who rack up a lot of tackles anyway, rather than sacks. In fact, in my league, only ONE of the top 25 scoring defensive players (LB's, DL's and DB's combined) from last year racked up more than 9 sacks, and that was Bart Scott. Still, with Merriman's projected numbers from last year, he seems to me like a rare player who can rack up a ton of sacks AND put up big numbers on a weekly basis. I always like my teams to have at least one "explosion waiting to happen" player in addition to solid point scorers. That's why I recently drafted Ryans, Briggs and Aaron Kampman in my league. 2 "tacklers" and one guy who can possibly put up a multi-sack game at any time. Well sure I guess thats part of it, but isnt everyone looking for the consistant high scorers? My main point is that I think we will see numbers more like Merriman's 2005 season (which he played 16 and had a good but not great season, fantasy wise) than the numbers he put up in 2006. That's why I recently drafted Ryans, Briggs and Aaron Kampman in my league. 2 "tacklers" and one guy who can possibly put up a multi-sack game at any time. If we are talking DL (more specifically DE), than sure I am gonna want a high sack guy. But my leagues start 2-3 DL, 3LB, and 2-3 DB, so I want my LBs to rack up high consistant tackle numbers and leave the consistant high sack numbers to my DL. I prefer seeing Merriman put up big numbers this yr off the juice, than adding stats to a tainted season while he served a suspension, while on the juice. Merriman will be lucky to get 13-15 sacks this yr, and 60 tackles, imo. I dont just look at how a player did the year before, I look at the whole picture. Merriman lost fellow LB Donnie Edwards next to him. He lost his DC Wade Phillips, and he has a new HC. Those are 3 important factors for any player. Throw in the fact he recorded huge numbers while on roids, and he will be tested more than any player in the league next yr, lets just say I want to see it before I give into the Merriman hype machine.
