Things we do / do not know

The FF public seems to have anointed Vincent Jackson as the #1 WR, without even considering the possibility that Craig Davis (rookie WR out of LSU) or Malcom Floyd (4th year WR) end up with a more impressive role in the passing game than VJ.

I own Vincent Jackson in a dynasty league and Davis/Floyd in the other ... so, my bets are hedged a little biit. I still haven't seen really any good reason to KNOW that one guy or another is the undisputed WR1 (realizing that Gates is really WR1 and Tomlinson is really WR2).

Any Chargers homers with insight here?

the chargers depth chart has Kasim Osgood backing up VJax....Floyd starting and Davis behind him...reading between the lines that says that VJAX is #1 and the other 2 guys are 2/3

i see it as Jackson, Davis, Floyd, Osgood in that order until Parker is back. then Parker moves into the #2 or #3 spot depending on what Davis does.

Floyd is more of a downfield threat for the offense i think. no way Osgood is more than #4. all that being said, Jackson still has to prove himself. no sure things here that's for sure.

I thought Parker had not impressed with his play last year or this years camp even before he was hurt and was in danger of falling down the depth chart.

The San Diego media - radio and news paper, are singing the praises of Craig Davis. They say he has speed and hands that no SD receiver has had in many years. This is Jackson's year as the #1 but don't be surprised if Davis matches, catches, or surpasses him if the local hype is real.

Apparently the thing that I read coaches and Rivers love about him is he constantly strives to learn. He is watching game film, studying past plays, etc similar to the way Harrison/Manning do.

Before blasting me, I am rehashing what their coaching staff is saying, I am not saying he will be Harrison...

Huge Charger homer here.

Let's just make sure we are all on the same page. There are not enough balls to go around with Gates and LT. Whoever the #1 is he still won't be a top tier receiver. I love Craig Davis, he might be something special. Vincent Jackson is make or break this year, solid receiver. Malcom Floyd is the wild card. He has had a great camp and could be very solid. The most upside about this corp is Malcom Floyd. Craig Davis is still young and learning and Vincent Jackson has yet to prove anything to me.

I see Rivers spreading the ball around. No SD wide-out will be a FF gold-mine. VJ will be the designated #1 WR on this team at the start of the season, but after that, who knows? Davis and Floyd will get their chances to move up.

I think that's it ie Jackson this year, Davis next year. Just what being #1 WR on this team really means, though, is debatable anyway.

Huge Charger homer here.

...Vincent Jackson has yet to prove anything to me.

:D

He has yet to prove anything to you...aside from being the first Division-2 WR ever selected in the first two rounds, suffering through an injury for most of his 3-catch rookie season, then strapping on the pads and catching 6 TDs in his 2nd year -- including all three passes thrown to him inside the 10-yard line??

His improvement thus far has been impressive, to say the least. With Gates around, Jackson certainly has a lower ceiling than many WRs, especially in terms of receptions and yardage. But he could easily reach 10 TDs, and 1,000 yards isn't that difficult for any #1 WR.

The problem with VJax is that he's gone from under-the-radar to not-so-secret sleeper status. That's why I traded him in all but one of my dynasty leagues. :D

If I were going to draft him on his Collegiate career he would be a stud. As for 27 catches and 453 yards, that is a good start for a career but impressive, no. 6 TD's are very nice, no question but impressive as a whole? Let's compare that to Ashley Lelie, 28 catches for 430 yards, granted not as many TD's but I don't see anyone that high on Lelie. Point is on a team with Grandpa McCardell and Eric Parker last year he didn't even crack the starting line up. I would be the first one in line hoping for a break out season but I will be reserved in my judgment.

Go Boltz!

This thread is helpful but I wound't mind some clarification on his health. I am looking to grab this guy as my WR3 if he's ready to go.

While Gates and LT will still be the cornerstones, I think Ds will struggle to deal with a new serious threat at WR. Even if you look back at McCardell's numbers, he was certainly fantasy roster worthy in 2005 (917 yds, 9 TDs). Couldn't Vincent easily hit that mark or more?

VJax is physically in the mold of a Terrell Owens. Size, good speed and great hands. He is a match up problem for smaller DBs for sure. He is the #1 in SD right now. Rivers loves to throw to him from 15 to 25 yards out of the endzone.

Buster Davis has a chance to play a lot this year, but when Parker returns will be the #3. Parker is a cluthch player for the Chargers. He may not be a great fantasy WR, but as for being a playmaker, Rivers looks for him and Gates when he needs a 1st down. Charger and NFL fans know that Parker had a bad game in the Playoffs, but was a big reason why the Chargers could sustain drives during the regular season. He seemed to always make the plays they needed. You don't pull a guy off the field that can do that for you, despite the statistics.

What will probably happen is Davis moves to the slot and create mayhem for safties trying to deal with him, Gates and LT coming out of the backfield. Davis could be worth a late round flyer, especially in leagues that do not have PPR. Davis could be the occasional 2-3 catch for 75 yards a game type player with the occasional long TD. In deep leagues, this could be worth a shot for bye week fill-in.

I see the future of this offense with VJax and Davis on the outside, Gates, LT and Rivers driving the Train. Gonna be even harder to stop. Who do you cover. It will be too hard to put 8 in the box against this team. Players are signed for the next few years. 1st year dynasty league players should consider this. The Chargers should be good for years to come!

that came during the massive change last week. Floyd looks like the #2 there at least until Parker returns but Davis is still challenging him. Floyd has looked much better in preseason games but the final word on the #2 has not been determined yet.

This is a good call. Floyd has caught ev ery ball that he touches except one this pre-season. He is, after all, the first guy that Rivers hooked up with on a TD in his career. Floyd is serviceable, but VJax is the definate focus and Davis will, for at least the short term, the slot guy. They want Davis to be the deep matchup problem and a situational player. He will get his snaps evey game because of his unique skill set compared to the other WRs.

Floyd and Parker are almost interchangable as far as role goes, and Parker is the known commodity. Davis, with a year under his belt, will probably vault past these two if he keeps working as hard as he does.
