Things we do / do not know

Randy Moss?

Donte Stallworth?

Wes Welker?

Reche Caldwell?

Jabar Gaffney?

Troy Brown?

Is everyone going to catch 40-60 passes, or are one or two guys going to get more attention than everyone else?

How is Moss looking in camp? Anyone see / hear anything interesting about how the three new WRs are looking?

I would think Gaffney & Brown would be odd men out of that group and Stallworths' hammy is about due for a strain.

NE - Patriots WR Gaffney At Head Of Class

Source: Karen Guregian, The Boston Herald

New England Patriots fans are hoping QB Tom Brady develops with WR Randy Moss what he had with Deion Branch. Right now, however, the receiver closest to the Brady/Branch dynamic is not Moss. And it's not Donte' Stallworth, the other burner brought in during the offseason. Instead, it's Jabar Gaffney . Given Moss' hamstring injury, he hasn't been on the field enough to establish that kind of rapport with Brady. The same goes for Stallworth. So far, Gaffney has looked the most in sync with the Pats quarterback during the first three weeks of training camp, with Reche Caldwell next in line. You can see the connection between Brady and Gaffney on both the timing routes and the option routes.

Gaffney's been flying somewhat under the radar while everyone talks about Moss or Stallworth. Don't let that slip by your radar as you head into your draft. If there's a coach in the league that'll let the production and not the name dictate playing time, it's Bill Belichick. Stay tuned but for now, I like what we're seeing from Gaffney.

Edit: Actually Here's a link to the whole article.

This is the same Gaffney who barely made a mark with the medocre WR corps in Philly. Don't count on him doing much with a better group of pass catchers in NE.

This is also the same Gaffney that had back to back 100 yard games in the post season. He will play a lot and has had an awesome camp.

Right now the WR's look to be Moss, Stallworth, Welker, Gaffney, Caldwell, Washington

If Brown gets off Pup and even looks half way ready he will take the 6th spot from Washington. Chad Jackson to Pup then to IR.

Unfortunately, our FFL doesn't extend into the NFL post-season.

Injuries to the others are the only reason Gaffney has more than the mildest of value.

I would like to draft Moss as I see a massive upside there, but the cost will probably be too high for me.

Even if 2 good games are a sign of what this guy is capable of, I am not sure what you are agruing for. Is he a fantasy starter? Will he be a starter in NE or get his fair share of looks in a game? I believe the answer to both of these questions is 'no'. At best, I think he'll be #3 with a chance to slide into #2 if/when Stallworth goes down, but he's still got to deal with Welker and Caldwell, not to mention Maroney and Watson fighting for touches.

I'm sure there are a few players that we can look at for a couple of good games only to disappear from the NFL and/or fantasy football map. I think Gaffney would have shown his talent and impact in the NFL by now. I highly doubt that this guy will do anything worthwhile for a fantasy team.

he really made some plays in the playoffs....and this is the most he's done since coming into the league.....

with Tom Brady as his QB no-less, but Brady usually has a wideout that he favors more than others...especially on MNF..

I mean, he seems to click with Brady really well...

I never was making a point about him being a fantasy starter. This thread is about the New England WR situation. The fact is he will play a part and if/when Stallworth is injured he could be someone to pick up on the waiver wire. If one of Moss/Stallworth gets hurt during the season I see Gaffney starting over Welker based on the position. Welker would stay in the slot where he does his most damage.

Gotcha. The wavier wire pick up would be the way to go. I thought you were arguing to pick him in the draft even in deep leagues.

He has not practiced since Aug. 4. He has a hamstring injury but everyone keeps saying it is nothing that should be a concern. I would not expect him to play a down in the preseason but to be ready for the Jets.

...and, therefore, probably more than a little rusty for the first couple of games?
