John Lynch

Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips has never preferred to hide his defensive schemes in preseason, particularly if he's installing them with an entirely new group of players.

The Cowboys blitzed more in Saturday's 31-20 win over Denver than in their preseason opener - enough to reportedly upset Broncos players expecting more of Dallas' base defense against their depleted offensive line.

"They came out and game-planned us, blitzing every play," Broncos safety John Lynch told The Denver Post. "They came after us. It's no excuse for the way we played. But I think they might have broken the code of ethics for the preseason."

The Broncos got a preview of Phillips' scheme during four joint practices with the Cowboys at Valley Ranch earlier in the week.

Some Cowboys players were unaware of Lynch's comments when the locker room opened Monday morning.

"If you're putting a new system in, you got to see how things work on live film instead of at practice against your own guys," said Ferguson, who is adjusting back to a one-gap system rather than the two-gap he played under Bill Parcells.

The Cowboys played mostly their standard scheme, though starting inside linebackers Bradie James and Akin Ayodele pressured some up the middle and strong safety Roy Williams showed his effectiveness closer to the line of scrimmage when he stuffed Broncos running back Travis Henry for a one-yard loss.

Conservative or aggressive, the starting defense has been equally efficient. Indianapolis and Denver were held without a touchdown at Texas Stadium.

Phillips also shrugged off the comments during his Monday press conference.

"Our guys play football," Phillips said. "I don't know any defensive player that doesn't want to be aggressive

Maybe its smart to devise a scheme to shut down the opponents 2nd team offense in the preseason, or maybe it's just overkill. Hard to say from my couch. I'd tend to think that John Lynch knows a thing or two about defense, and I certainly wouldn't call him a whiner.

Plain & simple, DEN got its ass handed to it. If Lynch doesn't like it, then do something about it during the game.

As for the game planning, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if Phiilips opened the playbook in the preseason. He's not the best or smartest HC in the business, and that he extended his team to win a preseason game & consequently gave every team DAL plays a good look into the playbook already is going to bite him & the 'Girls big time. That said - Phillips is one of the best in the business as a DC. I won't take that away from him.

Pretty much what I wanted to say. I'm still moving the Girls D up on my list.
