FishFreak
Fantasy Football is gambling period. Even if the league is free, you're still in a competition with other owners over player performance (stats). I really don't understand why the commish would allow this since it's so closely tied to gambling and it involves their own sport football! FishFreak
are you a cop? It's just a topic that came about in a conversation boys that crossed my mind, calm down. You're more than welcome to spend all day reading stuff about what a moron Vick is or best fantasy team names. Seriously, in my opinion players shouldn't be allowed to openly participate in selecting fanatsy players they play against in their own sport for obvious reasons especially when money is involved. budlitebrad
I think they should be worrying more about retired players than fantasy football.
detlef
It's actually a pretty good point especially considering that I doubt any of these guys are playing in free leagues. I mean, where is the cut off? If you're in a $100 league it's cool but a $1000 league it's not? Hell, plenty of us or sick out of our minds with this stuff. What would stop them from going Pete Rose over the whole thing and getting into crazy leagues for mad jack? I understand it's all a sort of a silly topic to some degree. However, the NFL is nothing if not a league that deals with absolutes. I mean, you put the wrong sticker on the back of your helmet, it's 10 large. Just because they have to draw the line somewhere. Allowing some forms of gambling but not others doesn't seem to be their style.

piratesownninjas
Because the NFL endorses and sells it... How can they have fantasy stats and what not scroll across the bottom of the scree and have an official NFL fantasy mag but make it illegal for players to talk about or play? That must be newer as a few years back, there was an ad for FF, which ended with Vinitieri saying "Just kuckers, baby"

Yeah and where in the first post did you mention money leagues. It'd have to be quite a purse for an good NFL player to just quit on some games. Given that coaches go over gametape rigorously. I'm not even going to respond to the bolded, woot - am I drunk or what?.
Chief Dick
Don't even get me started about gambling in professional sports.
LosGatosEnFuegos
Good story about Cooley: one game either last year or the year before when he caught 3 TDs in one game. The guy he was playing against in his FF league had HIM for his TE, and his 3 TDs won the game for his opponent. Brutal. I don't think that FF will ever cause a conflict of interest for players. It's got to be too lighthearted of an endeavor for them.
jjpro11
you've got to be pretty messed up to be thinking about your fantasy football matchup while playing football in front of 60,000+ people and making millions doing it.

Furd
I think that the chances are pretty remote that Shawne Merriman is going to whiff on Frank Gore at the goal line because he owns Gore in a FF league. I suppose that if the stakes were high enough - lets say that dues were $1 million bucks per owner - you might have a problem. But since you typically have 6 other postion players on a FF squad (thus diluting the effect that one player's performance has on the FF outcome), it seems to me that an NFL player would have to be retarded to let it dictate his play on the field. peepinmofo
It isnt gambling unless there is a monetary exchange, at least thats what Ive always believed. Anyone can shake hands and say "I bet you the cowboys beat the dolphins", and that is fine. But if its "I bet you 100$ the cowboys beat the dolphins", well, that is gambling. If you went to a casino and played poker all night, would that be gambling? Sure. If you stay at home and play poker with your wife/GF/whatever floats your boat, but just for fun, is that gambling? Nope. ETA - Doesnt have to be monetary, but there has to be an exchange of something. Edited August 22, 2007 by peepinmofo
