SeductiveNun
OK, 2 days before our draft in Hibbing, and I just now get a message from one owner who is going to bail out because he has to work midnights that day. Never mind the fact the first notice of the draft day went out in June, never mind the fact he emailed me TWICE and confirmed he would be playing, never mind the fact it's 2 f'n days before the draft he leaves me scrambling to find someone to replace him, but I've already had to find one other person to draft for another owner already who isn't going to be there (although he did give me plenty of notice on that one which I appreciated), and findng another owner 2 days before the draft for this particular league is a major pain in the ass. Hell, I thought 3 months was plenty of advance notice for the draft, what did I know? Anyone want to head up to Hibbing MN on Saturday and take part in a league? Chief Dick
This happens to me every year. No matter how far in advance you set the date, something always happens. Happened again this year. At this point I keep a Rolodex of backup drafters to step in for a night. Usually works out ok. Just frustrating.
McBoog
In pay leagues, get the money, or at least half of it up front. Have them sign an agreement that they will either be at the draft or find someone to draft for them, otherwise, the $ is forfeited. It is a lot easier to find someone to play for free or half price at the last minute I only had to do this once in 11 years of my league. The point was made and we have had 100% participation since! Edited to add: The draft in our league is ALWAYS held on the first Saturday after August 15th. No excuses as you know when draft day is forever as long as you are in the league! piratesownninjas
I've had owners call an hour before the draft and say they were not coming... Luckily we've weeded out the spare owners and are returning all ten for the fourth year in a row...

rajncajn
Even worse, one year all but three of us showed up for our local draft. After multiple attempts at calling them we just ended up sitting around half the day eating pizza, drinking beer, watching tv & playing pool. Finally we get a call and apparently they had decided to go camping on the river the night before and the stupid boat broke down.
SeductiveNun
Our draft day is the same as it has been for the 12 years of this league, always the Saturday before Labor Day weekend. It seems like no matter what we do, we rarely have all 12 teams return, but we do have a core of 10 that have been there for a loooooooooooooong time now, at least 8+ years of tenure. Maybe instead of scraping for owners 11 and 12, we cut back to 10 for next season? The best we've been able to do was return all 12 owners for 2 years in a row. This year broke that trend when the two most recent owners (the current one I'm dealing with included) both pulled out of the league. This guy who backed out has been in the league for the last 2 years as well, and was a solid owner as team managemnt goes. His record usually stunk, but he stayed with the transactions and tried trading to improve his team each season, so it's not like he was just some scrub either, that's what's really disappointing. Yuke, if you're serious I can shoot you a PM with further details.

driveby
Never had that problem. I run a 14 team league and I have 4 people on the waiting list to get in. In fact, if you are on the waiting list you need to come to the draft to hold your spot in line. And since we switched to an auction format 3 years ago, I make the guys on the waiting list run the auction. detlef
You know, they have these crazy things called telephones that work pretty well. Have the dude draft by phone. It's pretty easy. Call him up, give him the picks, give him a few minutes and call him back. If he ends up at one of the swing picks it's super easy.

I believe his new job is in a manufacturing plant, so phoneing the pick in won't work. Besides, we re-draw draft position every odd number round so you aren' t in the same position throughout the draft. We have done the phone thing before though, it just isn't an option in this situation however.
SeductiveNun
As it turns out, one of the partner teams in the league are going to split this year, so we did come up with a replacement after all. Thanks for the input, help, and suggestions though everyone.

Needless to say, I now have to at least know any new owners personally or have met them a few times before they are even considered for taking over a team. I switched to this after similar events, and have had little turnover in the past 6 years. I also found that using this "I better know you well" system has cut down on the amount of issues and problems during the season.
