Lions RB Jones will be on roster, not sidelined 6 weeks

Running back Kevin Jones will be on the active roster when the Lions announce their final cuts today, a person familiar with the situation said Friday night.

Jones has been on the physically unable to perform list with a foot injury, and the question was whether he would remain on the list to start the regular season, putting him out for at least the first six weeks.

Lions officials conferred with Jones’ surgeon Friday, and the surgeon cleared Jones to come off the PUP list, the person said. The Lions plan to take it slow with Jones, but they think they will need him within six weeks, the person said.

Team spokesman Bill Keenist did not confirm the information Friday night.

“We have nothing to announce regarding Kevin until tomorrow,” Keenist said.

Jones visited his surgeon, Dr. Bob Anderson, on Thursday in Charlotte, N.C. Anderson recommended Jones remain on the PUP list, according to another person familiar with the situation. Anderson felt the foot had healed well enough, but he was concerned Jones could suffer other injuries because he wasn’t in game shape, that person said.

While rehabbing the foot throughout the off-season, training camp and the exhibition season, Jones was unable to practice. Jones has been rehabbing and running on the side. He even tried an unconventional heat acupuncture therapy in an Asian man’s basement in Saline.

If the Lions had decided to keep Jones on the PUP list, he would not have counted against the 53-man roster. He would have been able to work out and rehab, but he would not have been able to practice or play for six weeks. Then the Lions would have had three weeks to return him to practice. Once he practiced, they would have had three weeks to put him on the active roster or injured reserve.

This might be the argument for putting him on the active roster: Jones’ foot isn’t the problem. He needs to practice so he can get into game shape. By putting him on the roster, he can practice as soon as he is ready to practice and play as soon as he is ready to play — whether that’s in Week 2, Week 4 or even Week 7. He will be back much earlier than he would be otherwise.

If Jones stayed on PUP, he wouldn’t have been able to just jump into the lineup as soon as he was eligible Oct. 21 against Tampa Bay. He would have had to practice for a while first.

It’s worth the roster spot, which would have been taken by a player who wouldn’t have been active on Sunday, anyway.

I think that they will not PUP him but also will not use him much in the first month. Unfortunately, that just makes Tatum Bell a bigger risk. My guess is that Jones doesn't have any appreciable playing time in the first month. If he was truly so bad that he was a no-brainer PUP, they would have already come out with that. But he is at least "iffy" so I bet they keep him active on the chance he gets better before the 6 weeks is up.

Believe it or not DMD, but for once, I'm not going to argue with you here :D

Let's hope this wild card player does come out ok, because I drafted him in my league, LOL.

People on my auction league were giving me grief for paying $14 for him in the final round/roster slot. Even if he doesn't play a snap this year he is worth it as this is a keeper league with a $1000 salary cap and any RB in a MM system for $14 is worth it.

I hope he does return and start playing after mid season.

Well i look at it like this, he is gonna need at least 2 weeks of practice before they will attempt to put him in a game, so at the earliest its week 3 before he see's any action, and they have a bye in week 6, so they wont push it, he might get in on like 20-30% of the plays between week 3-5 at best, then will be starting week 7 after the bye. Imo

Hmmmm... I wonder if leaving Jones off the PUP would be more of an insurance move based on Tatum Bell's generally risky injury status. If Bell can't play, and he's certainly nicked up and injury prone, then the Lions may feel the need to have Jones at least available.

I suspect the Lions' preference is to give Jones the time he needs, but putting him on the PUP means they cannot use him, even if Bell is seriously injured. So, if they can afford the roster spot, I'll bet they leave him active as insurance purposes only, in case of a Bell injury serious enough to keep him from playing. If Bell remains healthy, then we might not see K Jones until the 6th week anyway.
