Am I wrong?

Backround: 14 team local league. Core of about 5 owners who have been together 10 years or so. Not very competitive for the non-core owners. (Pretty much a donation to me every year if I may be so immodest)

The Story: Woke up Tuesday morning to find I had won my game 92 - 91. Checked back on the site a few hours later and found I had now lost 93 - 92. Figuring it was one of those overnight statistical changes I didn't give it much thought other than to post a tounge in cheek message about how I had been ripped off.....

Fast forward to this morning (Wednesday); Looking over the site again (ESPN), I notice that on the transaction list is a commissioners transaction, removing the -2 points for fumbles lost. This change, applied retroactively, changes the score and changes the outcome of the game. So, I post a message to verify this is in fact what happened. Commish say, yes. So I protest (strongly) and the commish says that the handout the night of the draft did not have a -2 for fumbles lost, so she changed it. Besides, she says, she didn't set up the site, a friend did because she was too busy and she didn't check it.

My take: Make the change to correct the settings going forward, but going back and changing scores (and more importantly wins and loses), regardless of the reason, retroactively, is a huge fantasy no-no. :D

Am I justified in protesting this or should I just shut up and take the loss? :D

I'm guessing the other owner asked the commish why he had been penalized 2 points for a fumble when the rules that were passed out did not indicate such rule. Sounds like an oversite that was corrected and you just have to bite the bullet on this one my man.

It sounds like she corrected the scoring setup to match the rules that were handed out to everyone on draft night. I think she made a mistake in not immediately notifying the league of the correction. However, I would be inclined to just take the loss (easy to say, since it's not my team). I'm assuming she changed the scoring mechanism and it affected all of the games not just the score of your game.

edit: Wasn't trying to be redundant. I just type really slowly.

10 year league? Has this always been a rule? Or is it all of the sudden new after 10 years? :D

Thing is I'm in 6 leagues and to be honest I didn't remember.

Either way, I've pretty much staked out a position (which based on the responses here) is probably a loser.

Getting together with everyone Saturday to watch football so I need to come up with a plan to either smooth this over or stick to my guns and go down swinging. :D

Smooth it over and make sure that there are no other surprises moving forward. Make sure that the site and rules are all updated. Explain that you don't make noise just to make noise but if the commish was unaware of the sire errors, then obviously, you were too.

I think you are offbase unfortunately. The scoring system that the league rules had was no penalty for fumbles per your post. An error in setup IMO should be applied retroactively, especially since it was found in a timely manner (not like it is week 6 or anything).

Hate to say it, but I think you are indeed in the wrong here and the only thing the commish did wrong was to no publicize the change and reasons for it to the league when she made the change.

Let's suppose you are the other owner and you lose 92-91 because the commish made a mistake and included -2 for fumbles on the website. I'm betting you'd be screaming about how the league rules are clear and there is no penalty for fumbles.

The commish made two mistakes--not checking the scoring and not posting that she was fixing it. Bottom line--the rules are the rules.

Agreed. Unfortunately, you were on the bad end of the correct ruling. Now, make sure your commish is going her job and is on the ball so there are no more surprises.

+1.

I gotta agree with the masses here. And frankly, try to be happy that the error was found so quickly, and the W-L records were easily fixed. Had this problem existed for longer than one week (and god forbid many many weeks), then the correct action becomes much murkier.

Take the hi-road, buy a round for everybody Saturday night. You've taken everybody's money throughout the years anyway.
