Explain this call in the Giants game to me

3rd down for the Giants. Eli gets the Packers to jump on the hard count, completes a pass to Shockey for the 1st down. Shockey then gets hit with a delay of game call for spiking it.

The announcers (Buck and Aikman) said, as I also believed, that the Giants would still get the first down, but lose yards on the Shockey call. But the refs said that there were offsetting penalties, and 3rd down would be replayed. The Giants of course, ended up not getting the 1st and having to settle for three.

You could read Coughlins lips, "the play was over!!" And even a few plays later the announcers were still saying they believe the Giants got hosed.

So? Did we get screwed there?

Maybe. But Shockey is still a retard.

I didn't see it ... but it seems to be as if the 1st down was made and the penalty should be enforced after.

What is curious is the words "offseting penalties" which means there was also a defensive penalty on the play ...

There was - like I said, Eli got the pack to jump offsides on the hard count.

Buck said they got a hold of Mike Pereria, the head of officials, and he said that it should be treated like any other penalty, if there's two they offset.

Which if that's the rule, then at least the refs didn't screw up. But if that is the rule, it's a terrible rule. It means that the Packers actually saved themselves giving up a first down by jumping offsides!

Packers were offsides when the play started.

There you have it ... when the defense is off sides you get a free play ... unless you also commit a penalty in which case the penalties are offsetting and the play is re-played.

So Shockey was an idiot and his team paid for it

Certainly, Shockey was stupid. But I wouldn't be complaining if he, say, had offensive pass interference. This was a dead ball foul AFTER the play. It shouldn't bring the play back, it should just cost them yards.

I agree - either a bad rule or a bungled call.

IMO penalizing Shockey for that little bit is utterly stupid as well, but that's neither here nor there.

It seem to me that if the def. jumps offsides and the play is not blow dead you have the right to accept or decline the penalty. I would assume that the Giants would decline the penalty and take the play.

Now with the delay of game for spiking, thats a dead ball foul, which is a 5yrd automatic. I think the way the NFL rule is on spiking the ball is that they cannot take away a first down. For instance, this case. First down was made, play counts, but because the ball was spiked the penalty is 5 yrds from the end of the play. But I didn't see it so who knows....
